Who the fuck popularized this shit and why did it catch on? Not only does it look retarded, it's an objectively worse way to fight than leaving one hand free.

This is completely arbitrary, in ancient China a single bladed sword was considered less complex than a spear. Same chopping motions that peasants used in their work while thrusting is unnatural and requires more training.

Nah only in the west because swords were a symbol of nobility and easy to carry around when traveling. In chinese fantasy, polearm users are very common. Since china is always at war, it isnt weird to see a hero carrying a spear or halberd with him at all times since he will be frequenting the battlefield often.

It's because the concept of an agile fighter fighting with two swords was already a concept in Japan (Musashi). Thus, when the Japanese made a shitload of RPGs and games, that concept was imported to the rest of the world and people who thought it looked cool would try implementing it in their own games, with the origin divorced from the original concept.

Think it's also the reason why all dual wielding characters are dick-ass smug motherfuckers. It takes a level of expertise and bravo to use two blades instead of something practical.

Axes get shafted in every fantasy game except maybe World of Warcraft (at least back in the day). Not even Elder Scrolls broke the mold with Skyrim despite the whole nordic barbarian theme and them being their signature weapon in Morrowind prior, all the best artifact weapons as per usual are swords.

It looks cool with pistols, but you don't see it nearly as much nowadays because "muh realism" and the fact people get really autistic about guns and their proper usage. You won't see some character running around holding their crotch while firing a submachine gun sideways, one-handed, and above their head in a video game unless it's extremely cartoony in nature, sadly.

Parrying daggers are the exception because they are designed specifically for that purpose. If you just have a straight, single-edged knife, you are more likely to direct the blade of the weapon you are trying to deflect to flay your wrist.

And even if the blade does stick, it's likely you will be disarmed via impact alone, especially if you are trying to deflect a much heavier weapon, as the force of the impact will travel directly into your wrist.

You can use the side of a buckler as a bludgeon, along with the face of a buckler. Shit's meant to help you parry attacks, but can also be used to rattle someone before letting you go in for the kill. Worst case scenario, you still have a metal, blunt object to help you wrestle an armored combatant to the ground before you go in with a dagger or sword.

No, virtually any DAGGER will be adequate, parrying ones will simply have an aggressive guard.
> If you just have a straight, single-edged knife, you are more likely to direct the blade of the weapon you are trying to deflect to flay your wrist.
Nobody is fucking going into a knife fight of this sort with a fucking kitchen knife. Daggers have guards/quillons.

Which is 100% less deadly than fucking STABBING a guy.

Bucklers are harder to carry impossible to conceal and not practical for the EDC situations that average Eurpean men carried armaments to handle. A little dagger you can draw to pair with your smallsword or rapier is easily concealed and worked into your daily attire. A buckler? Not even close. A buckler is for somebody PLANNING to get into a fight. The main gauche parrying dagger was something practice by commoners to deal with criminals and offenses to their honor.

A dagger was a sidearm and would be used in open combat only as the last of last resorts.

Parrying dagger + rapier/another dagger was for duels, not tussles with highwaymen or warfare. Dual wielding was a meme for posh tossers stabbing eachother in the courtyards of their palaces.

It's a meme but a good one. It requires more money, more training, and isn't 100 percent better. Not everyone can do it in the first place, as the minimum floor is higher for strength, dexterity, agility, and smarts. Consider the shield, particularly the buckler type to be a bashing weapon and it makes more sense.

Euros did it too, see florentine style two sword forms.

t. Nito Ryu 1 dan.

It has a lot to do with the fact that the archetype of the rogue/assassin has shifted from its original concept.

A rogue used to mean someone like Garrett, who avoids confrontation as much as possible and uses his dagger only to eliminate obstacles quietly. Today, when you hear the word rogue, it is often thrown around to refer to these ninja warriors that can go toe to toe with actual soldiers and even spellcasters.

Personally, I blame WoW for this.

in morrowind, theif birthsign gives you less chance to be hit. most thief weapons are built around you moving back and forth and staying out of enemy's range of attack.
best light armor is starting armor. (ignoring glass which is so heavy its not worth it for a pure thief class)
basically your meant to avoid all fights till your target is reached. and only fight him by kiting him around while avoiding being hit. most thief oriented magic, sanctuary and chameleon from illusion school, affect evasion in combat

You have to be built different in order to do it, but it's absurdly good if you can. On some level you need to be ambidextrous, so if you're not inherently that state, you need to train from a very young age the same way the Irish beat the left-handedness out of kids.
