How did devs get it in their head that people want extraction shooters? Like batyle royals makes sense but like the entire design of extraction shooters is like the antithesis of player retention.

From a corporate perspective, it'd be stupid /not/ to try to go for this. Especially when you tie it to other Live Service chicanery like premium passes, grindwall skips, and even just paying money for top-of-the-line gear to get you started. The problem is that the reality is these games are only played by a small number of devotees and they don't generate large playerbases owed to the fact that people tend to not like losing their entire loadout to server tick or being sniped with a full load seconds before reaching exfil by a camper who's been ratting his way through the entire game.

I remember playing a playtest of this during a Steam demo event and it was a game for absolutely no one, as in it just felt like a fake game to be in the background of a TV show or something like that without an ounce of soul, you couldn't convince me this is something that any human actively wanted to make.
I have no idea how this could ever been a commercial product, it was THAT bad.

i just want 16+ vs 16+ tdm or ctf in a nice big map on a server that runs a simple gametype with a point count so high it takes multiple days to finish

I just googled what "extraction shooter" means. Sounds kind of fun desu. I haven't played any.
