They lost a lot of their staff right before they got bought out, and the remaining veterans decided that they suddenly hated the kinds of games that made them so desirable in the 90s

Somebody should just scoop up the OG Rare crew but actually give them a big budget and a reasonable amount of creative control again. Nintendo preferably since Microsoft doesn't care.

Rare was never good

Simple the employees who wanted to make sequels to games like Banjo left to make unremarkable trash like Yooka Laylee. And the employees who were left within Rare wanted to make new games even if they were failures like Grabbed by the Ghoulies and Kameo. And about the employees who remained at Rare they were never skilled. A part of the reason Rare was ever any good was Nintendo managed them. Same reason Retro Studios became famous NINTENDO MANAGED THEM. Banjo was probably a fluke if Nintendo was not managing Rare.

Rare no longer had Nintendo watching them like a hawk. So they got lazy complacent and made a lot of trash like they would always make without Nintendo's firm whip on their bloodied backs.

The only thing missing is Microsoft waking up realizing Rare is shit and fires all these worthless hacks. With Gregg Mayles leaving Rare I say its about time to fire every Rare employee and black list them from the industry. Starve them as Rare is closed down.

To be fair now the types of games that Rare was famous for basically were cartoony and colorful these games would NEVER find an audience with Xbox whose customers were all shooting fans and shooters always require more edge and violence. Something not even Perfect Dark did. You need to understand that Xbox owners would never buy into a game like Banjo. The fact other colorful games like Blinx failed on Xbox goes to show that Rare was bought by the worst types of people.

At the same time Rare was one of those Resented Naughty Dog type developers. You know what I mean, they were bitter because they never could cash in on realistic cinematic movie games the way Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch eventually did. Rare never could make their own realistic original cash cow. That also helped kill them even further in the gaming industry. They resented their cartoony past and never could manage to deliver anything realistic. It really goes to show how awful they were as game designers.

What do you want me to say? Its time to grow up and admit that these hacks were never truly competent. If they had any success it was a mix of Nintendo dominating them into obedience combined with luck.

On their own with freedom you get mediocre underwhelming trash like Kameo. Or later on Yooka Laylee. That's the clue that these people were never very good at their jobs.

Microsoft is rich enough to afford not to care. To them the gaming industry was a novelty. A twenty year long novelty and Xbox is not a success overall. But does Microsoft care? No. They simply use their Fuck You Money to buy up many things and lock up more properties in their vault and Ubisoft may be their next acquisition.

What I find amusing about Rare is that Banjo is their most successful original property and yet that's the one game series they refuse to make a serious entry for. Oh well doesn't matter anymore because by now no one gives a damn about Banjo the property is so dead that Rare allowed Banjo in Smash come and go. Yes they put Banjo in Nintendo's shitty online service but NOT even the Xbox ports with quality of life improvements.

No it's because they were so successful they bought 49% of them, not even pokemon is owned that much by Nintendo.

>On their own with freedom you get mediocre underwhelming trash like Kameo.
That was microsoft, not "on their own".

>Or later on Yooka Laylee.
That was a few devs from a massive turnover rate of a company. And for what few people Nintendo hires when they leave they either die or become like Imamura.

Got to disagree, Bananza looks....lackluster. I'm not impressed by You Can Destroy Anything type mechanics especially since in gaming that's not new.

The game looks like it will sell pretty badly by DK brand standards. And the only fans who seem to like this game are all future arrested child molesters who deserve getting killed in prison.

Mercury Steam made Metroid Dread. It was great.
Mercury Steam also made a recent game called Blades of Fire, which was total slop.
It's the same with rare. When their games were good, it was not because of their own vision, but because whoever contracted them put their foot down and directed them to make a good game. Retro studios would probably also make shit games without Nintendo's guidance.

Banjo-Kazooie could’ve been thriving right now in a Nintendo-owned universe

>Rare never planned a-

This is NINTENDO we’re talking about, they have a very conservative mindset and would’ve forced Rare to make new Banjo games starting with Threeie on GameCube, they’re not like Microsoft where they let the team make whatever fuckass slop games they wanted, there’d be NO Sea of Theives/Kinectslop in a Ninty-owned world, Nintendo clearly loved Banjo and saw it as a valuable, obviously not Mario/Pokemon big but somewhere around Pikmin/Metroid of getting a decent amount of quality titles, dying off for a bit and then slowly returning, Banjo would’ve been in Smash much earlier and we’d potentially look at a title developed by the Odyssey/Bananza crew.

Nintendo as a Japanese company would not understand what made Banjo-Kazooie, a British-developed game work. The DNA of a lot of games stems from their developers. It's a special sauce that you can't easily replicate.

Never mind all the story, plot and gameplay elements that were cut from the final game. Not just 10 or 15%, over 40% and most of it was Krystal's areas. Cape Claw in the final game pales to the original.
