this, I don't get why they do this - anime characters are stylized with larger heads to give them more space for exaggerated facial expressions, among other things.
Removing that makes the characters faces blander, and the proportions just don't match.

Could maybe get away with it if things were of a higher quality Western art style or a semi-realistic art style, but it just clashes with anime.

I suspect the problem is in width rather than just plain size - we know it's common to use big eyes for easy expressiveness in both eastern and western cartoons, even in a style like this that uses less exaggeration than the kawaii uguu types, but if you want to constrain those bigger eyes into real human head proportions you end up with an abnormally thin head.
