It was clear that this wasn't supposed to happen. I just sat in the hallway and fed it arrows until it died. It was an enemy that was way above my ability to handle otherwise.
In Dragon's Dogma you can jump on top of a rock when fighting wolves and their pathing doesn't allow them to reach you. Again, it's clear this behavior is not intentional but once you discover it, it becomes hard to not use this feature because of the amount of wolves the game throws at you. I have no problem cheesing AI to win fights, or to take shortcuts, but if I find something in the realm of infinite mana or items I won't use it because it ruins my fun.
