Has anybody ever actually lost at a JRPG? Like to the point where they had to re-evaluate their strategy, change lineup, drop the game entirely, etc... I.E. doing something that doesn't include grinding or going back to the nearest town to buy 999 heal/revives.

I lost multiple times to the Earth Guardian in FFX because Quina was underleveled af, then i changed the equip and it was pretty easy, also i grinded a bit before Kefka's tower because i kept losing

No. The only times I've lost at a JRPG is because I beelined to the objective too much and was underleveled. I guess technically I could have won through attrition and item abuse after like a 2 hour fight but it's much easier to just go kill enemies in the previous room for a few minutes instead.

Probably the Seymour fights in FFX, though it's easy to realize that any story boss in that game can be beaten by just building everyone's overdrive beforehand and just unleashing them.

The fortress cannon thing early on in FF5 got me a few times cause the Old debuff is some bullshit
Came back with a like 3 black mages and one ninja with a pile of lighting scrolls and just nuked it instead of trying to heal through it

DQ8 Dhoulmagus is a pretty common one
You can do it underleveled without too much trouble if you make that bow that has the free party heal as a usable effect but you have to jump through a bunch of alchemy hoops and probably already know the item exists beforehand

You can grind in FF5 but it's more rewarding to re-evaluate your team considering how many options your given

scylla in etrian 2U is a huge bitch
even when you notice that she has a fixed attack pattern other than a couple 50/50s between using a physical or ice attack it's a rough fight. Partially luck on who or when you get inflicted with ailments but knowing if you should clear them or try to rush damage before she scales too much isn't easy to figure out. As well as thinking about what ailment you want to try and block since you only have 1 accessory slot but she has multiple ailments.
