ESA is great. Should mention that the bulk of the game is fairly straightforward, but some of the post-game content can get pretty cryptic, more along lines of La Mulana.
Also, there's a sequel in development, but it's more of a backburner project for the dev (Hempuli, who also made Baba is You, and just released a solitaire collection on Steam). The dev also recently updated ESA with various performance improvements and bugfixes.

Ender Lilies is worth taking a look at. Depending on what you hated about HK you might bounce off it, but I feel like it's a mix of all the best ideas from IGAvanias executed well. Plus the music and graphics are nice.

I just finished playing Chronicles of the Wolf which is basically a Castlevania without being directly derivative.
It's pretty good in that it starts out very linear, gets more complex and sprawling and then you hit a big area and that it is
Near the end I started getting a bit frustrated with scouring the map and getting a few items that felt like disguised keycards (1-2 uses to unlock places, some more cool than others) but that's about the point where it got simpler and rushed toward the linear endgame so the pacing was actually great overall. (caveat that I didn't do the optional superboss grind though)

I enjoyed Guacamelee because fighting is a bit fun being juggling and combo focused combat along with how the game wraps back into the hub with very little redundant back tracking. With the lack of back tracking through areas you've just been in the game has much better platforming sections than the standard metriodvania. Not only that, but a couple of your acquired attack moves double as a means to platform to net you vertical height or launch you more horizontally.

A dungeon crawler is not a Metroidvania. But King’s Field is a good game. If you’re looking for King’s Field likes. I suggest Hark the Ghoul. There’s also Lunacid but the character creation screen has that pronoun rubbish.

How do you get over the fact that metroidvanias waste your time by artificially inflating play time by having you traverse the map over and over unlocking doors previously locked because you didn't have the power up until some boss? Doesn't the repetitive back and forth, trial and error, bore you? You don't feel like your time is disrespected?
Anonymous No.715049356 [Report]
>>715049226
No, it feels like a power trip. You're stronger and can do things you previously couldn't. The better way to organize these secrets is by having them lead to new sub-areas rather than a singular powerup in a corner though.
Anonymous No.715049570 [Report]
>>715049226
the alternative is souls games and souls-like which they artificially inflate my play time by having bosses input read, delay attacks, 10 hit combos, weird hitboxes and bloated HP...

that's the whole reason people play metroidvanias
it's fun
