no modern GAAS jewery

designed as videogames first and foremost instead of german autism simulators

ande for me personally one of the big appeals: most of them supported splitscreen multiplayer

Singleplayer campaigns actually existing. Also driving physics change but whether they've been getting better is entirely subjective since there are so many valid approaches and styles on the arcade to sim spectrum.

I still say GT3 feels better than GT5 for example.

one of my first like "philosophical" thoughts on videogame reviews as a kid was reading written reviews on racing games in magazines and pondering how the hell I would even quantify "good physics" or "Improved physics and handling" at the time apart from blatant upgrades of crude hardware to sequels on hardware that were lightyears ahead of its prequel on older systems

i think part of the autism around driving sims today is the sort of natural existential conclusion of "we have all the computing power to be very realistic, but what the fuck do we do now' problem.

In a way, hardware restrictions that forced games to be more loose with the rules pushed people to have their own take on things.

Like I specifically LOVE to drive the Dodge viper gts-r, and porsche RUF ctr yellowbird in PGR4 for very different reasons. Much like why I prefer f-zero games over wipeout games.

How do you quantify that feel and market it?

Yeah, exactly this. Racing is (grossly oversimplifying here) more or less "solved". Its been fun since, I'd say, the 16 bit console generation. And then from like, Gran Turismo 2? We've more or less had adequately "deep" sim-like mechanics since then as well. This genre is probably the closest thing we have in gaming to a matured medium where it all comes down to artistry and taste now. So of course we've butchered it all with MTX and live service cancer.

My God could you imagine getting a game as complete as GT4 in Current Year? With modern cars and online multiplayer with good netcode? We SHOULD have this. The tech's been there since the majority of this board was learning to not shit themselves.

Depressing, really.

I really hope arcade racers have a resurgeance like "boomershooters" had.
Both of those were pretty popular staples of gaming in the west and even worldwide.

Especially the poor netcode thing baffles me.
I'd love to get like a really good version of midnightclub 3 spiritual successor.

I generally dislike open world racers, but it's like, dude, this was already a proven concept where this shit was FUN. Leveldesign is just shit now. Openworld is not "big open field", apply the same design ethos to your game like gta games used to do or hell, even good arenashooter maps.

>Cringier dialogue than in older titles

>DRM bullshit, temporary licensing, etc.
We could have nice visuals, tons of customization, more features, amazing physics and crashes, etc., all in one package but no one does it, so why would I care?

i get where your coming from, especially in gen 7 because everything felt like
>been there done that
some really creative racing games where coming out, think shit like Blur, Motorstorm, Split Second, PURE etc.
Problem was those games all sold pretty good but gen 7 simply was that era where every publisher was chasing COD money and if it didnt make atleast NFS kind of money your game was dead in the water .
Cool racing games are still coming out, Wreckfest is tight and the new TXR is surprisingly good for a 20$ game

My dream game would be this:
The open world of Forza (But with actual tracks on the map too like the Crew would do with the Laguna Seca)
The progression of Project Cars 2 (Where you start from go-karts and work up to like F1, LeMans etc and also doing license tests)
The grindingness of Gran Turismo 4 economy with used car dealers aswell as new.
The maintenance of GT4 where you have to think about your cars oil changes, engine rebuilds etc

Gettng to the hypercars etc should feel like a badge of honour and an achievement, not something everyone gets within 15 minutes of starting.

theres another thing about old street racing games is that they got the setting right in ways that modern games cant in the sense that the games didnt beat around the bush to make you feel like a criminal
what you are doing is illegal, you buy cars and parts from a black market, you outrun the police and hide in dark alleys and predestian cars are nothing but a hindrance to you
there was no honor in it but the sense of victory
i was playing NFS Unbound the other day and the story was such a gay mess it almost feels like a Disney channel special
>WOAH DUDE WE STREET RACERS ARE A OPRESSED KIND
>WE ARE ARTIST WHO CANT EXPRESS OURSELVES DUE TO THOSE FASCIST POLICE OFFICERS
>BEING ABLE TO GO 200MPH IN A SCHOOLZONE IS MY WAY OF EXPRESSION BRO
>WE HAVE TO LIBERATE THIS CITY FROM THE FASCIST POLICE SO WE CAN FREELY ENDANGER PEOPLE AND CAUSE MILLIONS IN PROPERTY DAMAGE
it was quite literally the most tone deaf videogame i ever played.

New cars are soulless tard transport devices and not really anything anyone would be passionate about. Can't make a racing game work out if the passion for cars themselves basically died, outside of people who like older cars ofc.

Another problem is that no one knows how to make a good atmosphere again. Its a genre where OST and vibes matter a lot, and nobody is good enough to managed to make either .

I was so mad seeing Forza Horizon's progression went to shit immediately in the sequel and it never course corrected.

I started Horizon 1 with a fucking 1995 Volkswagen Corrado. They had bosses in that game too. They fucked it all up so quickly, but the driving and the online play were so good in these games that everyone gave them a pass.

They're a middle ground between cart racer and racing sim.
Cart racers are too easy usually, they're party games designed to appeal to kids. After a while you get bored of them.
Sims these days are incredibly realistic and are designed to appeal to Germans (Just go outside and drive, lol oh wait it's illegal in the EU).
Ancient racing games like burnout, need for speed, midnight club are more difficult and still not realistic to the point of being antifun. The physics don't work like they would in real life, everything is exaggerated. They're a step up from cart racers in terms of difficulty and a step up from sims in terms of ridiculous fun. For an adult who can go outside and drive anytime, I don't want a video game for my entertainment to be a 1:1 representation of reality, I want to be doing physically impossible stunts.
tldr; they're fun
