>Shawshank Redemption is rated #1 on the imdb top 250 movies of all time.
>Popular consensus isn't that it's the best movie ever made, or the most popular, but that it's there because it's so universally acknowledged as good, it generally never gets negative reactions
>Effectively, it's the safest broadest pick for "best movie ever" not because the most people would agree, but because the least people would disagree - most people would call it a 'fair argument'
Taking that into account, what's the Shawshank Redemption of video games?

Shawshank is pretty basic as a work of art in the cinema medium, i have no idea how it is considered this good.

If this was truly the best film i'd quit watching films long time ago, thankfully its not even the best film of 1994. I always felt its the pick for tasteless casuals who don't take the medium seriously. and in this sense the equivalent of this overrated slop is Reddit Dead Redemption 2 a game that is praised only and exclusively by casuals who played a total of 20 games in their life

I'm 37. I hated Half-Life on release and still do. No character is interesting, the guns feel limp, the environment aesthetic is Playstation-slop tier, the driving in Half-Life 2 drags on far too much.

Again, the only thing Half-Life is now remembered for in terms of what it standardized in the industry is being locked in a room with some no-name NPC you can't escape from until the dialogue is done. Frankly, infinitely more damaging to the medium than anything Halo did. Two weapon limits and regenerating health have become optional choices in todays shooters. Standing there like a fucking lemon while you get blabbed at for ten minutes plagues every story game even today.

Honestly i think Clint films lack the artistic merit, they are human and he tends to send some good messages, but to me cinema should lean more to art rather than just tell basic stories, this is also why shawshank will never make it top my top films, i will take a film like Blade Runner which has some plot inconsistencies over something like Shawshank any day of the week.

Every time. Apparently incomprehensible that people wouldn't universally love a very boring shooter.

My first video game was Secret of Monkey Island by the way. I was playing games by the time I was 3. It's one of my first memories alongside puking bananas because I scoffed too many.

I'd say yes. The film went more in-depth with its characters in unflattering scenes. And the infamous French Plantation served as a reminder to how the war originally started, something most Vietnam movies don't bother with.

Common criticism of the redux version is how it slows down the pace, but I think their descent into madness and the final act were in need of more buildup to signify the journey.

There are exceptions, however. The Running Man was shit. Pretty disappointing that lots of his best stories never made it to movies, like Road Work and The Long Walk.

in many aspects modern game studios cant make a better product
they fail to match atmosphere, the setting, the character designs, the LIPSYNC, the voice acting, the gameplay loop going to a new interesting thing the entire game.
Everything you look at in the game broadcasts thought behind every decision. There isn't any part that makes you go "well that was done by an intern from india", nothing looks visually hideous. It was heavily playtested and revamped throughout development, bad parts were cut or changed to work better. They assumed nothing, every aspect was in contention. The storys script was made to fit the gameplay and level design, it wasnt made beforehand.

Then you can imagine the availability of tools that existed at the time and how they had geniuses to make the tools themselves, and have geniuses implement them better than rest of the industry at the time.

Everyone likes it. I'm usually a /tv/ fag. It has it's place because exactly of what OP said. Nearly everyone thinks it's very good, nearly no one thinks it's bad. Furthermore if you look at the execution of the various departments (be it cinematography or writing or production design) it's a case of every one of them landing a 7/10. There are no weak points, even if there are no individial 10/10 points. I have no idea what game fits that mold.
