Why do AMD GPUs get so much hate? Are the drivers really that bad?

I've been using AMD for years and never had an issue.

My 7900 XTX is unstable at its factory OC (3220). Had to dial it back to 3100 to stop it crashing. A fine card other than that. I've actually got it back in my PC currently because I got sick of my 5080's constant driver issues and I'm genuinely considering selling that card because it's really not that big of an upgrade outside of RT.

the drivers haven't been an issue for a couple of generations, now, but the meme persists like a musty odour.

My friend with a 9070 XT said that Portal RTX was shit with it.

Should I believe him? Because I want one too.

A few generations ago it was bad. Nvidia's are also bad earlier this year so both are capable of making shit drivers

Recently Nvidia drivers become shit, since 2025 or so. AMD in this state forever.

Nah, he's right. But only because rtx remix shit actively sabotages AMD performance. If you spoof your card to appear as an Nvidia model you get a notable increase in performance.

Unless you're planning to use Nvidia's cuda cores, AMD is good enough and cheaper for vidya.

Not really, that was a thing at some point but it works fine now. The issue is that it doesn't have the absolute top tier card nvidia has been pushing really hard to make their upscaling/framegen the industry standard and nobody can write a game that will render natively at a reasonable resolution/framerate so unless you enjoy 720p30 gaming you gotta turn on the dlss6gorrilion. AMD implementations are just worse or not supported

yeah AMD cards are more than fine to play whatever new vidya comes out. Even budget options can play most games at decent specs/fps

Ironically enough, the only driver issue I ever had happened with this latest update.
After this latest update Adrenalin keeps randomly opening up on the desktop. This is the only issue I've had with my GPU for the past year.

RDNA1 was rushed to market and the drivers were bad for the first three months or so. RDNA3 had issues with power, it didn't idle properly so it consumed 300W even when playing Terraria.
These problems were fixed over time, but at that point their reputation was already tarnished. RDNA2 and 4 were fine.

Nvidia also had a ton of issues over the years, but people seem to forget about those for some reason. Some cards literally exploded if you played certain games due to a bug / oversight in the BIOS.
On the CPU side, Zen was a buggy mess until Zen 3. But just like with Nvidia cards, everyone magically forgot.

So, yeah. People like to pick a narrative, and then they stick to that narrative no matter what.

was in AMD camp and 5700xt and later 7900xtx were amazing cards.

But after my 7900xtx burned out, switched to 5070TI and while it times lower performance (7900xtx is probably the only card worthy of 4k gaming), i found that DLSS is just better than FSR and overall gaming expereience is smoother, since "it just works". Raytracing also wasnt as much of a meme i believed.

As much i like AMD cards raw performance, they lost both DLSS, raytracing and AI game. So while they might be better price/value, next card i`ll buy will likely be Nvidia, since not only the actual computation power and memory amount matters, but the software too.

AMD went with a truly retarded approach to deskstop gpus past decade
>nvidia sells a gpu at X, amd responds with selling an equivalent product overpriced at launch which goes down in price few months later
>nvidia creates ml based upscaler that gets in consumer hands in 2018, amd doesnt until 2025
>nvidia has a BIG advantage on all software related things with amd not even attempting to fix things until 2025
>Nvidia pushes Ray tracing, AMD doesnt until 2025. Anyone wanting the new best thing wants to see path tracing and theres only 1 vendor offering that even today as 9070 xt can do some RT tasks well but flounders when used for PT.
>all this time only people buying amd are retards who arent up to date on graphics tech and just buy amd for costing less and regretting it later
>nvidia is still clear leadership in dlss transformer mode, ray reconstruction (did you see that shitty amd demo?), frame gen 4x.

I mean its nice they finally did something with 9070 xt but their leadership completely fucked things prior to that.

He's not wrong though. AMD is fine if you just want to throw more power to crank fps in older or smaller games that don't have those kinds of features, but if you want to play latest and greatest AAA you will have a worse experience.
Nvidia locked down the market by making big studios heavily rely on their tech and it ends up a feedback loop. Everyone will implement Nvidia features because everyone has Nvidia card a s everyone has an Nvidia card because most games use Nvidia specific tech.

Only AAA garbage requires high end gpus and AMD card don't have access to dlss which is also required for AAA garbage because optimization isn't a thing anymore.

Sorry mate, there are no XTXs whose gpu clock is factory overclocked to 3220Mhz (you tried overclocking it to that and games crashed). My Nitro runs all games stable at 3150Mhz gpu clock, 2750Mhz for memory and 1100mV and 90% max board power, which gives me around 15% more frames than on factory settings. I could tweak even more, but that would be too much work for too little return.

Coomers that can’t generate coomslop as easily on them. I know multiple XX60 e-waste owners that have a superiority complex due to buying shit cards if only because they can generate abhorrent AI slop.

Portal RTX is an Nvidia game much like Cyberpunk’s overdrive RT mode. Frankly speaking you shouldn’t be using either as Portal RTX looks horrible and Cyberpunk’s visual gains aren’t worth the performance deficit. t. 4090

The only issues I ever had with my amd cards, Rx480 and rx 6800, was windows randomly fucking up my drivers. I would turn on the pc, launch a game and it would be 20fps. Check adrenalin and it's giving an error message.
Just reinstall the drivers in 5 minutes and everything works perfectly fine again.
Idk why it happens but it does happen at least every 6 months or so
