It's a soulless corporate change of AoM into something else with prettier graphics.
The graphics programmers did a stellar job, bringing in as much modern eye candy as they could.
The graphics team would be divisive. Obviously can't compare early 3D models with modern shit as far as detail goes, but they changed a lot of shit in a more e-sports/marvel way.
2D art team phoned it in badly, none of these Marvel wannabes will ever become as iconic as the Odin or Zeus of the original AoM.
The gameplay was completely overhauled so the game doesn't really play like OG AoM at all. As before and always with modern AoE, to make it more AoE2-ish than the original.
They have you pay for the Chinese and Japanese factions. Both of these are running fairly generic myths, without much effort to attune them into a somewhat more unified AoM world.
It's not lazy, it's not really "AoM, but with better graphics" either. It is its own thing and depending on what you like or dislike, your mileage will vary a lot.
