I got HoMM3 complete whatever, whatever for just a couple of bucks on GOG since it was on sale. And because I couldn't find my old pirated copies and was too lazy to dig through all my old drives and such.
But I'm going to try that Horn of the Abyss mod for the first time. Will probably be an interesting experience since I've already forgotten like 70% of vanilla as is since I haven't played the game in forever.

Not sure how that's an issue, there's no fog of war (unless you play against necro with their veil of darkness building) and visiting redwood obervatories opens a big chunk of the map.

You unironically had to have friends to play it with in pre-internet era. Now I suggest you going youtube and watch some long many hours videos like TheKnoWnworld does. His channel is probably the best one for beginners in HoMM3, he always explains everything he does.

I only do it for low enemy stacks and only if there are no losses. For bigger enemy stacks even if I don't have losses I do them manually to conserve mana
Some times I do it for bigger battles if calculation are weird that results are almost impossible in normal fight (like I don't have losses of units what are attacked by enemy at very start)

One of the reason I made that is because when I played Heroes 3 that was the main menu we had. Then I saw the complete edition with what I think looks like fan art. HD edition on Steam ain't that good either, the fire on the sword looks bad.

I honestly I couldn't get into it in past but now I decided to return to it for good and I'm playing mostly this game for last few weeks

the difficulty curve of the campaigns is all over the place

the one where you have to play as drakon and kill the dragons is hard as shit (comparatively, at least) while the gelu missions that come AFTER basically win themselves. the crag hack one is also a real fucker while the undead campaign right at the end of shadow of death is incredibly easy

The only good thing about it is the original main menu and all the campaign music plays properly.
Complete edition has a bug where not the right music plays for the campaigns.
The neutral theme for example is notably missing.

HD edition is dogshit. It literally introduced new bugs and crashes that weren't there before and I doubt they fixed it. Game had like 2 patches before they dropped support. I piss on Ubisoft and will continue to do so as long as they exist.
