Its a better city sim but not a better settlement sim. In dwarf fortress you control a single community of several dozen to at most 200 dwarves or a single character or party in adventure mode. Syx is about managing an entire city-state. Both have very good simulation systems but have different scales.

I played a few hundred hours on the free version, and loved it. The Steam version is objectively better and still improving. I was not expecting a random ranged combat update. It's also crazy that every time there is an update, DFHack is ready to update less than 30 minutes later.
Lovely game that is lovingly supported.
I've tried so many colony sims, and I keep going back to DF. I even put 30 hours into the ugly piece of shit that is Rimworld.
