>>715084573This, except I would just drop the entire debian branch of Linux and switch to Arch based distro. If you don't want to install arch yourself (don't blame you if you don't) then the best version of "arch out of the box" is EndeavourOS. Or maybe Steam OS, but I've never tried it.
Problem with debian based distros is that they are stuck on very old package for a very long time. I found that just annoying in many instances, having to wait for them to finally release something that is available everywhere else already.
And Ubuntu specifically has a lot of gay shit on top. If you really wanna stick with Debian family, just use the pure Debian. Ubuntu is cancer.

>>715085409>It's not even a server distroIt primarily is. The way devs deploy servers is:
>pull a specific Linux installer/image>do a clean install into a VM/Docker>install your software>deploy your serverPeople are usually using Debian, but Ubuntu is often the second most popular choice. WSL is often not even used and devs still prefer using virtual machines if they're forced to run Windows on company provided devices.

>>715085742I recently upgraded from AMD RX590 to Nvidia 4070. Nvidia seems to work just fine but I found one weird quirk that makes it not as perfect as AMD:
When you go idle and the monitor blanks and you return, the refresh rate will be somewhat broken. Everything will look fine at first, but if you run something fullscreen, the screen will go fully black. Running
xrandr --output DP-0 --refresh 144
fixes the issue, so just applying the resolution again seems to do the trick but why is that needed I'm not sure. I made a ticket on the nvidia forum, maybe they'll fix it.
>>715085921lol xterm
>>715085927Sure, debian and ubuntu is both used, but saying WSL is not used often in favor of virtual machine is crazy. I've used Linux inside Hyper-V virtual machine in that kind of environment, but that's because I wanted my entire autistic i3 setup. 99% of developers are Wintoddlers anyway, so all they want is to run VS code and compile / run the code in Linux. WSL is perfect for that.
It also plays much better with corporate VPN than Hyper-V. Not sure about WMware but I doubt it's any different.
Technically yes, but I run games in a Windows VM with GPU passthrough.
>>715086307I mean, idk. I personally don't know a single dev who uses WSL. All the devs I know that are locked into Windows are using VMs for Linux work.
Maybe it's just the dev circles I'm in.
>>715086516People still do that...?
I thought that was a thing people did back when Wine was still crap and Steam for Linux couldn't install Windows games.
>>715086678It's still less hassle with better compatibility.
>>715079093I've been using Linux on Nvidia cards since ~2005 and had no major issues. Now I have a 3090 and it works perfectly.
I am using X11 though.
>>715086660Fair enough. I really do think that running a full VM instead of WSL if you have to use Windows is rather unusual. I guess your buddies are Linux guys, so they want control and setup their entire VM. But there is a ton of people that think of Linux as just that thing for the server or embedded, so WSL is the perfect solution, where they can keep their Windows environment and tools and just compile and run their code in WSL. Microsoft invests a ton of money and time into WSL because it keeps people in their echosystem that would otherwise perhaps switch to working fully on Linux.
I've worked at a company where everything was done remotely on big compile machines over ssh and that was honestly more preferable than working on Windows locally.
>>715086307Is that only with high refresh rate like 144hz?
>>715087005I think what breaks is the gsync specifically, because when I open my monitor's OSD that shows the current refresh rate, once I open a full screen game the refresh rate drops to 1. Then it goes back to 144hz. I've played with TF2 and it would work fine but when I set max fps to bellow 60 it would go black.
Setting the refresh to any value would fix the issue. For my monitor to work in gsync/free sync it has to run in 144Hz mode, but then it surely works correctly, because in a game that has fluctuating FPS, for example in KCD2 I get 90-100 fps and my monitor's OSD shows the same Hz number as the in-game fps counter.

Removing 32bit libraries would make WINE/Proton and Steam unusable, which would defeat the point of Bazzite. Linux doesn't have something like WOW64 yet. But, this scare will probably have developers looking for a solution to the 32bit problem. 32bit software will be abandoned in ~13 years across all operating systems simply due to the time overflow issue.

I'll give you my own real experience. In 2019 I've bought a new gpu, AMD rx590. Even though AMD is well supported on Linux, the driver being open source and present in mainline kernel, the driver for this gpu was merged in 4.20. Ubuntu and consequently Mint was stuck on 4.19 for next few months. Nowadays I would be able to install a new kernel, but back then I was just stuck with a black screen on a brand new gpu... Arch Linux worked out of the box, since it always ships latest and greatest.

Linux noob here, just switched. All my internal hard drives are listed as "removable" hard drives now despite not being removable and I have to re add them to steam everytime I turn my computer on because of it. Every time I turn on my computer I have to go into steam settings and tell it where my other hard drives are to see the games installed on them. Wtf is it's problem.
>>715099121>it often means "I can't play this game because my dependencies are outdated and the latest Proton doesn't work"Often? Not really. Having been on Mint for years, I've never had a problem with the latest numbered version of Proton. There was one time when I couldn't use Proton Experimental on Mint, but that was shortly before a new Mint version was released if I remember correctly.
>>715099817It might be that your drives aren't listed in your fstab. Then they aren't mounted at boot. Depending on whether you start steam before or after mounting them yourself, steam won't see them.
Look into how to add a drive using its UUID in fstab. Then tell steam the location you set as mount point.
>>715099817>Wtf is it's problem.Your understanding of how internal drives work:
>All my internal hard drives are listed as "removable" hard drives now despite not being removableFalse. All drives are removable. Just because they're not connected via USB doesn't make them non-removable.
>have to re add them to steam everytime I turn my computer on because of itUnfortunately, very few distros auto-mount your internal drives on startup. Ask some AI to tell you how to edit your "fstab" file to add your drives automatically on boot.
>>715099817What you want is to auto mount your hard drives on boot. That is done by putting an entry in /etc/fstab. Depending on your distro you might have some graphical program that might do it for you.
For example one of my entries for a NTFS formated disk looks like this:
/dev/disk/by-label/ntfs-nvme /mnt/ntfs-nvme auto defaults 0 0
/dev/disk/by-label/ntfs-nvme is a symlink to the specific disk partition device
/dev/disk/by-label/ntfs-nvme -> ../../nvme1n1p3
there are also links bu uuid and other values.
Second option is the mount point, you can chose whatever you want, then the filesystem option (can be auto for auto detect), the mount options (can be just defaults for the defaults) and 0 0 is for the priority and requiring filesystem check on mount, 0 0 is a good default choice.
>>715100514add 'nofail' to your options!
>>715098874>>715099121>Did you try using X11 instead of Wayland?>Do commands like nvidia-smi work?Ubuntu nor Bazzite aren't even detecting the card and I reseated and checked the pins in case it wasn't getting power.
>>715099191I already have a 7900 XTX set to the side solely for a Linux build. Just waiting on the rest of the parts to come in.
>>715100818oh yeah, add that, otherwise the system will halt if it fails to mount this filesystem.
>>715100514Btw, as a bit of comparison, if you're thinking why do we have to do this when Windows seems to do it automatically ?
Windows only recognizes fat and ntfs filesystem and they get a single letter assigned to them based on the order of being detected.
Linux supports dozens and dozens of filesystem with different options, you can tweak many parameters to tune for performance versus reliability (on fly compression, journaling, access / modify time logging or not, etc.)
You can also mount them in any arbitrary location in the filesystem, you can lay multiple filesystem over each other (overlayfs), generally speaking, you have 10x more options and it's hard to decide what should be the default.
>>715101276>if you're thinking why do we have to do this when Windows seems to do it automatically ?Bazzite Linux mounts drives automatically without ever having to fuck around with fstab.
>>715101516When I say Linux I really mean Linux kernel. Linux supports everything as I described and you control that with /etc/fstab. How you manage and generate that file is up to you, some distros will automate it, others won't.

Arch is extremely reliable which cannot be said for CachyOS because it mixes AUR stuff with official repos and you eventually run into dependency issues. EndeavourOS is based since it's just a glorified Arch install. Arch install exists but has dogshit defaults.

For example, Ubuntu has more than 4.21% market share since the list doesn't include non-LTS versions or Ubuntu 22 which people still use. ("Ubuntu Core" is just people who install Steam via Snaps, which in 99.9% of cases are Ubuntu users).
So, even Ubuntu is more popular than Mint despite being shit and losing popularity rapidly over the past few years.
>>715147653Not that guy but... how?
Are you so distressed by the start menu that you literally cannot find whatever program you need to use?

>>715147663stop lying, nothing works properly on linux. Only a few amd cards but they crash the os after a few game sessions.
lmao @ you retarded tinkerers.
>>715148051You know you can just talk to people if you are feeling lonely.
>>715147562>Company I work in uses Google Accounts made from non-Google emails for Google Docs and Sheets.Your company is 99% on Google Workspace, which is not fucking free, you dipshit. It costs approximately as much as M365, which is $35 per user per month.
Then, who knows, they've hired you, so maybe you're actually yolo-ing it with free accounts.

>>715148139So why did you respond to me?
>>715147663>>715147397Shit now I remember how awful it is to use Wacom tablets (or tablets in general) on Windowns.
> move your hand a little> cable dislodged> "tung-dung" USB sound> okay guess I will just reconnect the cable then?> it works BUT pressure sensitivity is lost forever in the pale> You now have 2 options: Open the Services menu, locate the wacom driver service and restart it, and if that doesn't work, you need to save your work and reboot the entire machineIT'S SO ASS I FUCKING HATE WINDOWS
>>715148051This guy is right. Linux is dogshit for anything except server and some types of dev (esp. data science). Playing vidya on Linux is a hacker LARP.
>>715147865NTA but I think the entire taskbar/start menu is obsolete and people that desperately clinging to this design are doing themself a disservice.
If you know you want to launch program called XXX, let's say "Steam", why would you click on the start menu and then scroll with your mouse on a alphabetically sorted list looking for "Steam" to click ? I press Flag+d for a quick launch window. This list is sorted by most often used programs, so what I use most often is already on top of the list. It is also a fuzzy searcher, meaning if I type for example "ea" it's gonna highlight stEAm.
So in 99% of cases I press alt+d and a single or two letters to select the program I want. Everyone complains about the Windows 10/11 search bar being shit and using bing instead of looking for programs on your computer, so we all know this is more preferable than scrolling with a mouse and looking for an item manually on a list... Just do it the right way and switch to that flow completely.
>>715148187yes, they pretend to be some hackers and need weeks to get games working. Lintards are truly worse snowflakes than trannies.

>>715148503to be fair, this sounds like a shit driver, not Windows fault on it's own. I bet the linux drivers are not made by Wacom and a bunch of random people are delivering better quality than a big company. Many such cases.
>>715148438>baitKeep telling yourself that while you painstakingly "custom install" Arch because your setup is so unique that only manually picking a DE will unlock the true potential of your system... to run 20-year-old games.

>>715148438>>715148618So do you have any plans for the weekend? Me, i'm going camping and doing some fishing.
>>715148191What program is that app launcher?
>>715148693I'm going to a nice luncheon at a country club and might go shopping to buy a new hat. It's been really hot outside lately.
>>715148605>to be fair, this sounds like a shit driver, not Windows fault on it's ownProbably. This shit also disconnects itself randomly all the time.
>I bet the linux drivers are not made by Wacom and a bunch of random people are delivering better quality than a big company. Many such cases.Yeah, wacom is a shit company in general.
>>715148693Are you camping as in wild camping or campsite camping?

>>715148743rofi, but it's a more nice looking version of dmenu. The entire idea of having a list of things and doing a fuzzy search to select an item from that list comes from a dmenu program, so if you look for dmenu or dmenu like programs you can find many different versions of it
>>715148779Sounds pretty fun, what kinda hat you thinking.
>>715148882Wild most likely, doing motorbike set up so no strong plan on where I'll camp but just figured do some trails to I find a nice spot.

>>715148993I don't know what kind yet. Maybe a woven straw panama hat or so. I don't want to look like a redditor, but at the same time a baseball cap doesn't work well with biz casual and doesn't protect the neck from sunlight. I'll see what looks least goofy in the shop first and decide later.
That camping plan sounds absolutely awesome. I hike a lot, but haven't been camping in ages now. What kind of fishing do you do?
>>715147653Exactly. I don't do much and I'm fine with what Cinammon offers. Which is Mint's intended purpose.
>>715149138I'd recommend a like proper wide brim hat but not like a cowboy hat, don't know what the exact term is but have worked with people that wore those from Australia that looked decently professional.
As for the fishing, I typically do coastal fishing as that's around where I live but out camping usually fish for whatever in freshwater, mainly bait fishing cause too lazy for fly.
>>715149252I wish there was a distro whose intended purpose is to be a good OS
>>715148987Oh right I'm familiar with both of those but I'm not sure how to make it saw my most commonly used programs. I'll look into it later
>>715145270Yeah sometime around 2023-2024 Linux became the most stable gaming environment. Literally better performance as well
>>715149386That's what I'm thinking of too. Panama hats seem to work pretty well with suits and have this distinct summer look, so it doesn't look too off and enough to get me from my home to the office. We had UV index 11 this week, so it's literally been burning a hole in my scalp.
Sounds nice and comfy, anon. Used to fish as a kid, would gladly do it again. Great way get a change of pace from the city.
>>715149735Yeah that hat looks nice, sorry I don't know hat names well.
Genuinely recommend getting into fishing it's a great hobby to have. Check around the area you live, there might be locations that are stocked for fishing.
>>715149852There absolutely are. I'm like a quick 15-minute run from the coast and have bumped into people finishing. Just a matter of getting some basic kit and going. It's quite full though, so maybe worth just getting a bit further away and making it a dedicate fishing holiday. Do you release or cook the fish?
>>715149531It's a matter of a config. https://github.com/EndeavourOS-Community-Editions/qtile/blob/main/.config/rofi/config.rasi
>>715149965>needing to config shit to launch programslel
>>715121585Bruh I use arch. Did you setup trim timer? Btfrs maintenance? Power management? Split lock detection off? There are so many things that you need to do that I don't remember them all. It's not a matter of being literate, it's realising that the first boot of your newly installed arch is only the starting point not the end goal.
This type of settings are always done for you on other distros and windows so most people don't realise they even exist. Yes they are documented, but not spoon fed to you like rest of the instructions.
>>715150040This is part of EndeavourOS, just linking to their soruce code...
>>715149963Generally cook if it's worth the size, otherwise release.
If you're that close to the coast would def recommend it, biggest issue is that you really need to pay attention to like tides and weather and whatever but still even when it's a "bad day" being out along the pier with a couple of beers and listening to some tunes is awesome.
For like river fishing it's way easier as you can just pick whatever gear and will be perfectly fine.
>>715150152I'll do that. Thanks for the tips, anon. Have a great camping trip!
>>715150314Cheers man, enjoy the shopping!
>>715148191With kein you just need to press S and instead of spitting you click on Steam. I don't understand why Windows keeps being stuck in the XP/Vista era.
>>715148605Wacom is great on Linux. Even the native Linux drivers that come with the kernel.
>>715072791 (OP)no, why the fuck would i play video games on linux when i could play video games on a functional operating system instead?
>>715150991It doesn't have built in aspect ratio adjustment.
ie. Your tablet it 16:10 but your display is 16:9 resulting is circles becoming ovals.
