I'm planning to, but it's taking a lot of research to figure out what the optimal setup would be for me. Apparently running wayland on a GTX 1070 is a bad idea, but some DEs are already ditching X11. But I guess I just have to try and see how it goes.
Already running Arch on my laptop, but I think for my desktop I'm going to dual boot with Win10 until I'm confident I no longer need it.

I still have Windows installed on a separate drive for cases like that, but now Ubuntu is going to be my main OS

I sure am, the only Windows I have left is Windows PE. Gaming has been the easy part, figuring out how to configure rest of the OS so it works how I need it to has been the difficult part.

Keep in mind: I do NOT love it. File browser sucks ass, the file picker (the one that opens when you upload/download something) is different than the normal file browser for whatever fucking reason, it crashes a lot, updates break shit all the time, I miss many QoL stuff from windows...

But it does feel faster. Stable Diffusion is faster. Games are faster. It's just the user experience of actually using the OS sucks ass compared to Windows, but oh well. Better than (((Windows 11))) for sure.

Nope. Never bought a pre-built unless you count Steam Deck. I've only ever built one PC, over a decade ago, and since then I've only replaced the PSU and GPU. Should have built a whole new PC but I was lazy. I only replaced the GPU for better Vulkan etc. support.

Problem with debian based distros is that they are stuck on very old package for a very long time. I found that just annoying in many instances, having to wait for them to finally release something that is available everywhere else already.

People are usually using Debian, but Ubuntu is often the second most popular choice. WSL is often not even used and devs still prefer using virtual machines if they're forced to run Windows on company provided devices.

I recently upgraded from AMD RX590 to Nvidia 4070. Nvidia seems to work just fine but I found one weird quirk that makes it not as perfect as AMD:

When you go idle and the monitor blanks and you return, the refresh rate will be somewhat broken. Everything will look fine at first, but if you run something fullscreen, the screen will go fully black. Running

fixes the issue, so just applying the resolution again seems to do the trick but why is that needed I'm not sure. I made a ticket on the nvidia forum, maybe they'll fix it.

Sure, debian and ubuntu is both used, but saying WSL is not used often in favor of virtual machine is crazy. I've used Linux inside Hyper-V virtual machine in that kind of environment, but that's because I wanted my entire autistic i3 setup. 99% of developers are Wintoddlers anyway, so all they want is to run VS code and compile / run the code in Linux. WSL is perfect for that.
It also plays much better with corporate VPN than Hyper-V. Not sure about WMware but I doubt it's any different.

Fair enough. I really do think that running a full VM instead of WSL if you have to use Windows is rather unusual. I guess your buddies are Linux guys, so they want control and setup their entire VM. But there is a ton of people that think of Linux as just that thing for the server or embedded, so WSL is the perfect solution, where they can keep their Windows environment and tools and just compile and run their code in WSL. Microsoft invests a ton of money and time into WSL because it keeps people in their echosystem that would otherwise perhaps switch to working fully on Linux.

I've worked at a company where everything was done remotely on big compile machines over ssh and that was honestly more preferable than working on Windows locally.

I think what breaks is the gsync specifically, because when I open my monitor's OSD that shows the current refresh rate, once I open a full screen game the refresh rate drops to 1. Then it goes back to 144hz. I've played with TF2 and it would work fine but when I set max fps to bellow 60 it would go black.

Setting the refresh to any value would fix the issue. For my monitor to work in gsync/free sync it has to run in 144Hz mode, but then it surely works correctly, because in a game that has fluctuating FPS, for example in KCD2 I get 90-100 fps and my monitor's OSD shows the same Hz number as the in-game fps counter.

Well, but I don't use Steam and I pirate everything. Cracks sometimes do dodgy shit that trips up wine/proton. And then there are games that just don't work right. Mods add another layer of headache, especially when they come with their own binary code, dlls, etc. I'm sure MOST games work well enough or maybe even better but there's always going to be the occasional game that doesn't work right so I just default to a VM where games work just as native and I don't have to think about it.

Sounds about right. My mini pic came with w11; it was able to handle a 4K/60fps stream at ~45fps(and that’s after capping the data rate to like 20mbps).
With fedora and compiling moonlight from source, 120mbps is completely smooth with zero jitter due to dropped frames. (Server is w10, running sunshine; and using a gigabit Ethernet connection to the client)

The only thing keeping me on windows for my main gaming pc is the frustration of having to write bash scripts to handle multiple monitor and audio sink setups. Linux has come a long, long ways.

I can't say for sure. Depends on what you play exactly and I'm sure things got better since ~2020 when I set the VM up. Even if your cracked games don't work you probably have an iGPU on your CPU that you can use on Linux and do a GPU passthrough like I do. I'll give you my own real experience. In 2019 I've bought a new gpu, AMD rx590. Even though AMD is well supported on Linux, the driver being open source and present in mainline kernel, the driver for this gpu was merged in 4.20. Ubuntu and consequently Mint was stuck on 4.19 for next few months. Nowadays I would be able to install a new kernel, but back then I was just stuck with a black screen on a brand new gpu... Arch Linux worked out of the box, since it always ships latest and greatest.

Windows only recognizes fat and ntfs filesystem and they get a single letter assigned to them based on the order of being detected.

You can also mount them in any arbitrary location in the filesystem, you can lay multiple filesystem over each other (overlayfs), generally speaking, you have 10x more options and it's hard to decide what should be the default.

I've been trying to run Mega Man 8 within Legacy Collection 2 and the videos don't work. Sometimes they do if you look at it right but then the game crashes after the cutscene's finished and it also forces the game in windowed mode. Tried both normal and several GE-Proton versions. I installed mint on a laptop to familiarize myself to it before the cut-off of Windows 10. I'm not upgrading to 11, and the only reason I upgraded to 10 was that a friend of mine got his hands on a hospital copy with all the telemetry and tracking bullshit cut out of it. I really hope SteamOS gets working properly with nvidia and intel hardware because I'm not switching to AMD ever again after dealing with them when I was a poor teenager. If SteamOS gets working properly I'll probably just use that over mint. All I want my desktop for is browsing the web, vidya, and word processing stuff. If you know you want to launch program called XXX, let's say "Steam", why would you click on the start menu and then scroll with your mouse on a alphabetically sorted list looking for "Steam" to click ? I press Flag+d for a quick launch window. This list is sorted by most often used programs, so what I use most often is already on top of the list. It is also a fuzzy searcher, meaning if I type for example "ea" it's gonna highlight stEAm.

So in 99% of cases I press alt+d and a single or two letters to select the program I want. Everyone complains about the Windows 10/11 search bar being shit and using bing instead of looking for programs on your computer, so we all know this is more preferable than scrolling with a mouse and looking for an item manually on a list... Just do it the right way and switch to that flow completely.

I'd recommend a like proper wide brim hat but not like a cowboy hat, don't know what the exact term is but have worked with people that wore those from Australia that looked decently professional.
As for the fishing, I typically do coastal fishing as that's around where I live but out camping usually fish for whatever in freshwater, mainly bait fishing cause too lazy for fly.

Bruh I use arch. Did you setup trim timer? Btfrs maintenance? Power management? Split lock detection off? There are so many things that you need to do that I don't remember them all. It's not a matter of being literate, it's realising that the first boot of your newly installed arch is only the starting point not the end goal.

This type of settings are always done for you on other distros and windows so most people don't realise they even exist. Yes they are documented, but not spoon fed to you like rest of the instructions.

If you're that close to the coast would def recommend it, biggest issue is that you really need to pay attention to like tides and weather and whatever but still even when it's a "bad day" being out along the pier with a couple of beers and listening to some tunes is awesome.
For like river fishing it's way easier as you can just pick whatever gear and will be perfectly fine.
