I think this is my feelings towards FF7. I first played it in 1999. Somewhere in that neighborhood anyway. So yes I do have a lot of nostalgia for the game. However I'm not such a nostalgia fag that I'm incapable of turning a critical eye to the things I like to put into words why I like a thing. FF7 is a flawed game. Some of the flaws are glaring. But it's still my favorite game of all time. Because the things I love about the game far outweigh the things I dislike about the game

I played it a couple years ago for the first time. No nostalgia, no prior knowledge other than a certain death. Went in with an open mind understanding there may be some PS1 jank. Ended up loving every minute of it. There is so much heart and soul in this game from characters to the humor, and the music is fantastic. There are flaws yes, but the game doesnt seem like it wants you to take it seriously as some hight art literature, it feels like it was made to let you take your mind off of life for a minute and just enjoy an endearing story, so in a way some of the flaws add to the goofiness.

the materia system ruins any kind of gameplay or challenge because you just spam multitarget elemental spells that wipe out everything in one round

it's also generally a clunky game with some stupid forced minigames and it was when cutscenes started lasting like 10 minutes in JRPGs

outside of that it does have some interesting characters and plot but it really did usher in a lot of bullshit in JRPGs

Yuffie was an optional character. Amarant was 100% meant to be either an optional character or not playable at all, just recurring. FF6 isn't fair cause there was too many and for a snes game it was quite heavy story wise. Eiko is one of the last two summoner and basically serves as device to learn more about the tribe.

I was one of the ones that tried it despite being old as fuck, and let me tell you that it's one of the best. Play the original on a PS1/CRT for maximum soul. The original retains the proper tone and atmosphere of what it was trying to convey, don't rush it and take your time, you're going to have a blast. Never subscribe to the faggot notion that just because it's old and has outdated graphics by today's garbage standards that it's somehow bad, a good game is a good game despite time.

Well I played 7 first and liked 6 so it might work in reverse. Some might consider them similar in style like a lot of the technology like FF6 Magitek could easily be in FF7 and the Mako-powered shit in FF7 could easily be in FF6.

definitely needs a bit of mods from tsunamods or echo-s.
the main problem it needs fixed is the overly easy combat, or at least on bosses.
but all of the mods for difficulty have a problem with making enemies HP sponges. they do add mechanics for bosses, which is good, but they ruin everything else.
the base game lets u just 1 shot everything, will taking 1% of your HP. you can go through most of the game never touching a potion or cure spell, and thats with no grinding.

my suggestion, run away from most or all random encounters, it was a much better difficulty curve when i ran away from all dungeon mobs, and most world map mobs (only fought world map mobs for gil)

(for mods, use the updated chibi models. the larger models dont fit the world, nor do they match most of the NPCs)

sometimes u need to use the DPad to talk to NPCs behind counters.

I played it around the time that it first came out, I actually have very fond memories of staying up on Christmas Eve night playing it up to the Train Graveyard. Also generated a bunch of monsters in Monster Rancher. I just started a replay on my RG Slide, still probably the most atmospheric Final Fantasy. FFVI is my favorite, but FFVII is a very close second.
