That's not true. A lot of people will only play a game if it's getting consistent updates otherwise it's "dead."
So if a company stops development on a game, then the playerbase will dwindle down and they'll move to the new product even if there are private servers, offline mode, or whatever.

live service games aren't viable anyways, vast majority of them don't last even a couple months and destiny is barely kept above water
