Dark Souls
Why will there never be a game as Good as Dark Souls (2011)?
Was it truly the last good video game before everything went to shit?

It will take a while, what with gaming being less about passion, drive and innovation than ever before. But it will happen eventually. Some people, somewhere, somehow will find a way. FromSoft were literal whos before Souls became a hit.

Games like this come around every now and then but even before gaming becoming the hellscape it is now, they were exceedingly rare. For example, I think Warcraft 3 and Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic were like this.

Reminder that every thread arguing about the Souls Series will devolve into shit because Dark Souls was a solid B+ across the board in a time of C average games. And so it brought a lot of people in who valued it for different things, and since the series began to hyper specialize after Dark Souls those various people will argue about what matters in the series forever.

There will never be another game like it. The biggest strength of Dark Souls was the first half, and the reason why the second half is so weak is the same reason why the first half is so strong.
Fast travel.
It's such a small thing that completely drags the game down. But normalfags love fast travel, so no major studio will ever go against it.

Most people use a guide to some extent to get through it. That people have to do that is fundamentally poor design.

Most people use a guide for every video game.
The game itself has an inbuilt comment system by other players that if used can easily direct any blind players towards everything they need.

Depends. The fact that DeS made the game progression so ambiguous is actually what made the game popular enough to get over here in nipland. They initially thought it was a pretty standard WRPG when one of them began digging around the files to find there was all this hidden content that required various actions to actually progress. They then spent all their time trouble shooting and trying everything on everything and loved every second of it.

Some people genuinely like that sort of gameplay where you do one little thing then talk to everyone and check the map for any changes.

>Most people use a guide for every video game.
Wtf? That's not right. Usually people who use guides are those who want to minimax in competitive multiplayer games or basically cheating out of boredom.
Whereas in the souls series people use guides just to get through it "normally".

For example, how the hell would anyone think to themselves that they need to put points into ADP in DS2 when leveling up to increase the amount of iframes when rolling? It's such a basic fundamental thing to play, but it's not explained in the game and you wouldn't discover it by accident.

Is it poor design now to have secrets and optional content?
>people have to do that
They don't. That's a (You) problem. You may have some obsessive compulsive disorder but the average person will still get a great game even if they miss the drake sword or the ash lake or the painted world. It doesn't matter. You can make it through the game just fine without using a guide, and your experience will arguably be better, even if you miss stuff.

And if you liked it enough to do a second playthrough, you'll be rewarded with amazing new things if you care to look deeper. Not to mention if you play online the community messages will help you find just about everything easily. Sounds like pretty solid design to me. Only the NPC quests are kind of fucked up, not gonna defend that shit.

I'm not talking about little secrets and optional content here and there. Take the Mytha boss for example from DS2. The whole arena is filled with poisonous water and you'll need to get rid of that to have a chance to defeat her.
But how do you what to do here? There's no ingame indication of water being pumped into there, so you wouldn't think there's some pumping system that you can disable.
Turns out you're supposed to use an ordinary torch to set fire to the metallic axis of the windmill that the arena is inside. This somehow makes the water go away. That is pure insanity. You know a torch can't burn metal and there's no way you'd even assume that sabotaging a windmill reduces the amount of liquid in the area.
And this is a crucial step to progress in that game.

The only fucked up part is the Blighttown step but yeah.
If you discount killing off hollows for no rewards Siegmeyer is really the fucked up one.
Reah has multiple routes depending on what you do
Solaire has a natural end point just by following the main path and an alternative one if you can put 2 and 2 together on a second run
And everyone else just relies on you buying their shit and/or talking to them on occasion.

Roll iframes come from Agility (level ADP) instead of equip load.
Binoculars let you freely aim spells in first person. Vertical aiming has strict limitations otherwise.
Anonymous No.715102723 [Report]

Dont listen to this guy. Leveling equip load (vitality) lets you roll further and regen stamina quicker. The further you can roll the less iframe you need to dodge attacks.

So many of the best games ever have lots of jank to them. Dark Souls is definitely one of them. Sure a remake with improved combat could make the game a lot better but what they made in such a short time at that time is remarkable and I still had absolute fun with it earlier this year. The PS3 version.

Funny how there's zero gameplay discussion around DS1 or webms, but any moment ds2 gets brought up it's actual build tech and strategy. DS1 has the depth of a walking sim. Guess that makes sense considering it's a youtube game.

If you weren’t there playing when Dark Souls came out, you will never understand. Playing Dark Souls for the first time (hardly anyone played Demon’s Souls, comparatively) was a truly magical experience. Obviously Elden Ring was huge, but it’s not the same. Very few people knew what they were really getting into when Dark Souls came out. It’s spawned a sub-genre for a reason.

It isn't impossible to make the connection by any means, the windmill pumps the poison through the area and up to the chamber just like real windmills pump water. The problem is bringing the player to the conclusion that they have to burn the actual fan part, but that's why scholar added an NPC who points it out when you summon her and iirc a mannequin suspiciously in front of it. Also I don't recall it being remotely crucial whatsoever.

when will retards shut up about muh interconnected world? half of the world literally does not connect to any more than 2 locations at a time (entrance and exit), aka the same thing every other fucking game does.
also the actual ways environments connect is often lazy. riding the elevator from undead parish to firelink is cool until they do the exact same thing again at like 3 other points. what a brilliantly connected world where so many environments are just cheaply stitched together like this.
Anonymous No.715107471 [Report]
playing dark souls with randomizers is definitely the worth it. and feels thematically appropriate.
random fog gate connections and having to draw your own map of the the cluster fuck. I had multiple quellags at the bottom of blight down and a giant invisible artorias at the bottom of the new londo abyss. the struggle of tracking down those final lord souls. great times.

>mannequin
A Grave Warden, but yeah, there is a guy protecting it. It doesn't really fix it, because you'd have to summon that NPC, which most players refuse to do so for some reason. But also ensure the player goes right up the ladder and no go backwards to explore, so she doesn't die. And THEN, the player has to actually pay attention to her.
They really did the best they could to get the player to investigate, but it's still not enough. But if it was obvious and easy to do so, then you'd have to wonder why even have it there at all?
> remotely crucial whatsoever
