The game is carried so hard by it's concept (deep sea survival game). The implementation is so bad it's comical.

$250 million bonus is outrageous when you consider that Subnautica 1 didn't even net $250 million in profit over 10 years. I don't know why Krafton would have agreed to that in the first place. The whole reason UW sold to them is that they were bleeding money.

Steam takes 30%, so in order for Subnautica 2 to recover the cost of a $250M bonus it would need to gross $325M. Even at $80 USD per copy that is 4 million copies. Subnautica 1 only sold about 6 million copies over it's entire lifetime, at much lower price points.
That's NOT including the initial cost of acquiring Unknown Worlds, plus ~4 years of operating costs while developing Subnautica 2 and their other little Moonbreaker game that flopped.

I don't get it either. I know they gave just as many copies away for "free" on Epic etc, so perhaps their were big licensing fees involved. Also Subnautica was a glorified indie in development forever. Perhaps the publisher thought with the big money would come a big Triple A title version. Then they saw the result and shat themselves.

Krafton is the publisher of PUBG. Or rather they're the company that came out of PUBG's success. I'm guessing they just didn't know and got taken for a ride. Krafton also funded The Callisto Protocol which didn't turn out well, but cost a pretty penny.
