This game is way better than I expected it to be, and the free play isn't completely kneecapped like most other MMOs.

Weird expectations, I guess. Personally I found it to be worse than what I expected and wanted.

And it's a crying shame, because I'm a huge trekkie, after all.

Naw, it suffers from the same bullshit all MMO's suffer from: dogshit braindead "combat," a billion identical enemies that feel the same to fight, the story is 90% annoying fetch quests, etc.

I will admit that STO has some okay customization and flying around being Captain of your own ship with a totally customizable crew (bonus points for making your bridge crew all hot space sluts). Ultimately though there is no challenge or interesting plot, it's just grind in this "iconic" location, then grind in that "iconic" location, etc.

Also the community is fucking cancer.

I think I still have a lifetime account for this which got 500 paid cash each month I think after they went f2p. I wonder how much I have at this point. I uninstalled it back in the day when they went f2p and the very first thing they did was adding a ship to their newly introduced gacha that was better than anything else in the game.

I've had a PC and a ps store account I spent hours on and never paid a dime for after f2p. If you like Berman era star trek or TOS/TOS Movies it's worth playing through the missions for the depth of voice acting and fan service. Outside of that it's a janky old game.

I only bought the lifetime subscription out of mood cause I thought the Borg race was cool. The game was pure shit on release and it took them VERY long to release actual good content in form of the missions you mention. Some of the grind areas were OK but that's about it. Game had always a p2w issue but the f2p just made it worse.

You can get an Orion bridge officer once you reach Rank 4 in Diplomacy in the duty officer area; part of a special set you can get only one of for each KDF race, either gender, any of the specializations (Tactical/Engineering/Science). KDF can do it with Rank 4 Marauder for any of the original Fed races.

Been playing on and off since release and it is fun for newbies but new and meaningful content comes at a snail's pace while the cash shop is always open. The game even has two shops. The Mudd's market is so overpriced that it warns you to wait for a sale, which is meta I guess.
It also suffers from bloat due to passing through multiple publishers and a swap from subscription with a store to ftp. For example, originally when you reached a new rank you could choose a new starship and at the admiral ranks you got an endgame ship. Then the level cap was raised with new endgame ships that were paid for, as well as alts for lower-ranked ships. Then there were "Tier 6" vessels that scaled as you leveled up, negating the majority of lower tier vessels entirely.
One of the "funnier" memes was "What is your beef with the Galaxy" since the Enterprise-D Galaxy Class starship was late to the Tier-6 craze. And as a result we have pic related.
Nevertheless, there are a lot of free content and you can play almost to endgame on a free ship. The Vaadwaur will filter players in a tier 5 vessel though which is a shame as the Delta Rising arc is perhaps the best part of the game with the Klingon arc and the current Multiverse borg vs borg vs borgathon being deep lows.

Having been raised on the SOB-derived games that STO broadly lifts its mechanics from, the ship balancing system makes me want to shout into a wall. Instead of ships logically being more capable based on their in-universe statistics and where they fall onto the tech tree, you have ancient meme ships outperforming their alleged far-future successors based on a combination of popularity power and balance.

What is the point of getting to play a Universe Class if she's nerfed into being unrecognizable to balance her with the other T6es? EVE Online doesn't do that: if you can get the big bad mobile station, it functions like a big bad mobile station so long as you don't try an bully Concord with it.

I think the in-universe explanation is that all players are DTI agents, so their ships have something that evens the playing field to the modern era, it's also why future and temporal agent ships don't one-shot everything else, which they normally would.

The explanation is that Starfleet (and later on both the KDF and the Romulans) are now making use of modular refit technology, allowing for them to upgrade old ships to modern standards. A bunch of the classes are said to be mothballed ships refit for active duty.

Early on in STO's lifespan there was an implicit tier system where TMP/TOS ships formed the low tiers, Lost-era ships (basically everything that died in Wolf 359) formed the middle tiers, TNG formed the later tiers, and STO-originals were the late-game ships.
That was thrown out of the window following the cash shop making premium T6 "temporal" versions of popular ships, and the system has been fucked sideways since.

Not that I entirely hate it since it means I can stay in my derp ball forever while those whose ships aren't popular to get a temporal variant are stuck forever sub-optimal, like the unfortunate sods whose favorite ship is the Pioneer class.

SNW tries. It doesn't always get it right, it usually doesn't get it right, but at least everyone involved has a vague idea as to what makes a good Star Trek.
Call me a cynical bastard, but that is enough of a qualifier to make it different from STD that didn't want to be a Star Trek at all but still wanted the clout of being a Star Trek series by making its MC the secret human sister of Spock who is not like other Vulcans in spite of being presumably raised by them and already being a human like they just wanted her to be Spock's sister so she is associated with popular thing (never mind that everyone already hated it when Spock was revealed to have a Vulcan brother whose relationship 'wasn't' just tacked on)

NTA but I will say that STD's a little better after they fuck off into the far distant post apocalyptic future after supposedly erasing all memory of STD or the characters existing in the TOS-era. It's still not exactly good then, either, but it's easier to watch it as some non-Trek sci-fi show and viewed through that lens it's not the worst show in the world. I do agree on SNW being pretty decent though, and I can even forgive some of the SNW silliness since TOS was largely sillier than TNG anyway

Yes, it came out just this year. I've always wanted the Excelsior to be a pilot ship although a cruiser that big having a "dash" ability would always look silly.

>>715120475
Orville is pretty close to the spirit. Definitely the anti-STD. Season one is very silly and might turn off some viewers. It picks up the stride in season 2 where the jokes are more natural and in-character, rather than "as the plot demands". Season 3 is pretty much a wrap up season designed to close off story arcs. Has value but is more of an extended goodbye.
I found it refreshing and probably "more Trek than Trek" with an optimistic future. It is definitely an extended fanfiction though, but unlike Enterprise it isn't LITERAL fanfiction with a 'computer end program' ending.

You can get everything for free once you understand how to farm dilithium. I played for a couple of years, got everything I wanted from the store, mudds and lockbox without spending a dime. The big problem STO has is that there is nothing to do once you finish the storylines. It's a game where you have to make "your own fun" because it lacks any sort of challenge. I ended up flying T5 ships out of boredom just to spice things up. If you just like flying different ships doing random dailies, then it may be ok. Just know what you're getting into in the long run.

Are ground missions still in the game? If so then the game is still garbage.

What is your secret? Some fleet let you in their dilithium mine?

I got sick of micro managing the farming officers. I got one t6 (for free) on my Sony account by playing through one event and made admiral, filled my ship and free inventory. I couldn't keep going to further upgrade my equipment endlessly and hated having to sacrifice shit because I couldn't fit it in inventory anymore

There's no secret, the basics for dil farming has been the same for years. Basically, you can refine 8k dil per character, so you create a bunch of characters, mostly Jem'Hadar (because they start at level 60) and park them in DS9. You do admiralty (ferengi), doff missions and reputation. Between all three you get 8k dil to refine. It may seem a lot but once you get the hang of it, it's 5 minutes per character. If you somehow are running low on dil, you take that character and do mining or a couple of missions, but I didn't find the need for that in years. Another tip is to save the boxes you get from your Endeavors and open them with the character that's low on dil since they can get you dil randomly in good amounts.

You could probably search for dil farming guides from 7+ years ago and still find them effective. It hasn't changed much.

Maybe when I am facing another mid-life crisis I will go back into the game and use this strat to get a decent ship for touring endgame content.
Great Bird of the Galaxy bless Jem'Hadar manual laborers.

Yeah I only did the officer mission grind for a month or two for the prem currency. I forget what sector it was, but maybe the DS9 one? I rolled a Klingon pretty much just to have a second currency farm, just flew around in a circle and logged out.

I hope they give TOS skins to the Discovery ships. I feel sorry for their designers who spent effort making a bunch of creative post-ENT designs only to have their babies get featured in Discovery and then be ignored completely once they did the time warp.
Except for the guy who redid the Constitution.

I feel like Cryptic was intending to give the Walker one at one point which is why you can fly it in the TOS missions, but forgot.

The best thing to ever come from Discovery was the acknowledgement that it sucked bad enough to be exiled into what is effectively beta-canon, where's any other major sci-fi property would attempt to polish the turd and spread it everywhere instead.

God I hate the LCARS-style interface they decided to use in later patches. It was ugly enough to make me quit my play-through for multiple years until my desire to control a fleet overcame my disgust.
Wish the mod had the same content as the base game though. I want ship-breakers to give me better incentive to not hold onto my old-ass 300 year old vessels that can be infinitely upgraded.
