Graphics are better
Combat is better
Narration is slightly worse but still good
Writing/Music are similar quality

Meta-game system is much, much worse. A roguelike doesn't work for DD. It removes all tension. Losing a character is just "lmao okay I'll start a new run" instead of panicking over potentially losing tons of investment in a character over the course of an entire playthrough. They inherently lost something when they changed from x-com lite to just a roguelike.

Exactly this. The first game made you feel every loss-when your leper with stacked quirks and a full backstory in your head bit it, it hit hard. In DD2, itโ€™s โ€œwhatever, next.โ€ The roguelike structure is fine for short bursts, but it strips out the long-term dread and attachment that defined the original. Itโ€™s not bad, but itโ€™s a completely different game at its bones, and I think a lot of people miss the old structure, myself included.

If DD3 went back to the hamlet, expanded it, and then had the combat/animations of DD2 it would be perfect. The only issue is the narrator passed away, sadly, and he is a lot of the soul of the game.

honestly this.
Ive tried a few others that promise me similar like Our Adventurer Guild and Aria Chronicle and there both great but they just lack the vibe original DD had.
Helps that DD has shitloads of high quality decently fitting character mods.

Get a fucking grip you retards. Not only is it the rarest relationship type but it is the most powerful and would be dumb for balance purposes if an all male or all female party couldn't get it.
In my ~50 hours with the game I saw a gay relationship ONCE. One time. A singular time. Get over yourselves.

Is it kind of silly that the Crusader can be "gay" (as if the random line he belts out once every 2-3 battles is a hardcore gay sex scene) when he has a wife + kid he abandoned? I mean yeah, sure, but you can't just make it so the Crusader can't get that relationship when he is a frontliner and would really love the heal/DoT removal.

I am playing dd1 now and while I love it, the game is overwhelming. Not sure which characters are good for which dungeons. What party compositions are good.

Just knowing that cove and ruins blight, warrens bleed and not even sure what's good in weald doesn't seem enough.

Moreover it just seems to me some characters are stronger than others. Never left for an expedition without vestal and hellion. And on the other side I can never find use for jester, man at arms, highwayman, etc

Certain characters are more complex than others and not everyone works in certain groups. Some groups are very "static" as in their position is set and movement fucks them up. Others are designed to be movement heavy, constantly abusing shifting position because skills that shift position are usually strong at the cost of potentially screwing up other characters.

I have not played DD1 in forever though. Once DD2 came out I had a hard time going back to DD1 since 2 has such better combat, but it lacks the hamlet system which is a shame. It also lacks the ability to bring multiple of the same hero which I never see people talk about.

>Agenda
Yeah... if they had an agenda they would have included some gay backstories for the characters and they didn't. They just classified the different bonuses from relationships under different terms and gave them some different flavor. The rarest is romantic that can happen between two men or two women but it is genuinely rare and I have seen it most often when you use the items that the game says are romantic (the lewd poetry, candles and chocolates, etc), but that could just be RNG.

Either way, out of every romantic relationship I got, all have been straight except 1. I think it is fair to say that if I saw 1 gay relationship in ~50 hours of gameplay then it is sufficiently rare and people are overblowing the issue.

I mean these are certainly some mixed reviews and more mixed than the first game but to say that is just disingenuous.
To answer for myself: I personally avoided the game due to everyone complaining about it upon release. During the steam summer sale I picked it up + the DLCs and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I absolutely missed the hamlet but I couldn't put it down until I beat the final boss.

Now though I haven't played it since then. Not really sure if I should try Kingdoms or just wait. Either way, I think the reception was too harsh. People act like it is just worse than DD1, and it is better in almost every way but fucked itself by abandoning the hamlet for a cheap roguelike system. I now find it hard to want to go back to DD1 because of the improve gameplay/graphics but I also just want the fucking hamlet back. RH need to get off their high horse and just make a hamlet DLC if they wanna be jewish and sell it to us.

Darkest Dungeon has 130k reviews and most of the negative reception happened when 2 was on epic. It's not a really good metric to just look at a couple latecomers who bought the game on steam later after everyone already knows what it is (not a true sequel) and then going "it was well received"

Everyone was shitting on it at launch. Dunno why you're even posting steam review reception when the game was on EGS for a long time before that. You literally admitted you avoided it because of complaints so why are you trying to tell me i'm wrong.

Also the game is trash idk what appeal there is. It fails as a roguelike and the combat is just not good. Again unless updates added some substantial changes idk but compare DD2 to something like slay the spire and I just wonder what is supposed to make DD2 better? You might argue that you pick a consistent party but the game actually has a lot worse RNG than StS from what I remember.

You sound like an idiot. You can not like the game, that is fine. If the hamlet being gone is a deal breaker I actually understand that considering it was so integral to the first game. However, the game ls not "universally despised" like you want to pretend it is. Maybe upon release on EGS. Maybe it was updates and DLC that "fixed" it or at least made it passable. Either way, it is clear that the game isn't hated as much as you think and you're just ignoring objective evidence.

I am sure a lot of the positive reviews ARE from people like me who were told the game was worse than baby aids only to actually play it at a discount and realize that is is fun, just kind of shallow without the hamlet. I viewed it more as like a campaign with randomization than a true roguelike because after beating the final boss there is nothing to do. It is not like Monster Train, Hades, Slay the Spider, etc where you can keep increasing difficulty (without using the dumb optional flame) or get more story like in Hades. It just kind of ends. But I am not gonna complain about getting like 45 hours of fun out of a game.

Go check the /v/ archives, reddit threads, etc at any period during launch and before any DLC announcement.

Be ignorant all you want but very few people liked the game. Not reading the rest of the post because you're so insistent that this wasn't the case for some reason and your only "proof" is steam reviews which again isn't where the game was first available.

I never said that you faggot. I know the game got a bad reception and literally indicated in my post ("I personally avoided the game due to everyone complaining about it upon release"). The original post was:

>Why are people starting to bring it up and pretend it's good? There's no way the updates actually fixed the game.

And I posted the steam reviews indicating that at least 75% of people would recommend the game. You're just ignoring those because they don't fit your narrative that everyone hates the game. They don't. Most people who have played it liked it. Maybe it was the updates. Maybe it was the DLC. Maybe it was the kingdoms mode. I don't know, my only experience is the latest version.

Exactly. This is what made DD1 so special. The gameplay is still good in DD2, but the stakes are so much lower. Yet at the same time, each run feels weirdly long. DD1 is overall the better game, but DD2 is worth checking out. Hopefully for DD3 Red Hook brings back the permanent roster of heroes.
