The game is designed with the understanding that you'll be running and jumping around and diving into paintings and stomping goombas: the placement of varying elevations, the background music, the spacing of NPCs. If you don't behave that way, the game suddenly looks empty and strangely configured, while the music's tone persists in spite of yours having changed. That's the entire idea behind liminal spaces: areas designed around you and others walking through them, but when you stop walking or those others aren't present, the place suddenly looks alien and empty - probably because it is, since you never look at it in that context. This is true for tons of old 3D games.
