I don't understand why people love customizing menus so much. I usually just launch a game immediately, and if I'm tinkering with the settings or something, having fun backgrounds is completely irrelevant.

Iwata was only kino from the Nintendo DS to the end of the Wii. Wii U and 3DS were some absolute "dead" years of Nintendo, and since then they've produced mildly interesting things again.

I do miss that DS era though. So many unorthodox games got made and it didn't even seem like a big deal at the time thanks to the open minded dev space he created through it.

It's a shame that no company tries to make their console OS fun and unique anymore. Wouldn't it be better for brand-recognition in the long term to try to create specific visuals and audio cues that players wil associate with this era? Like how people have nostalgia for the Gamecube bootup sequence. Those sounds alongside the marketing, packaging, shape of the console itself etc all evoke a certain feeling that people who remember it will think fondly of. Nobody is going to have a Switch 2 T-shirt in 20 years.

As per dev interviews they said the reason was that the switch was designed to be a “pick-up-and-play” console and they wanted it to be instant, whereas with all the extra stuff would make that take longer since it all has to be loaded in like with the 3ds. Yea more color options would be nice, and if they wanted to go all in they could’ve and let people weigh ease-of-use against all the decor themselves, but it wasn’t them just going “we hate fun now”

I get simplifying things for practical reasons, what I don't get is the lack of an attempt to reintroduce a concept that could make them easy money. Would replacing the white/black background with a PNG from Mario Odyssey impact boot/wake times at all? Modders do way more fancy shit than that on their hacked Switches with zero issues.

See, that's the thing: I understand corporations lying to justify saving a few bucks making a simpler UI, but passing an opportunity to make what's basically free money is what puzzles me.
Something as simple as pic rel being sold for $5 translates to thousands of dollars in revenue. Multiply that by hundreds of wallpaper swaps and you're looking at possibly millions.
It may not be the Iwata thing, but there's certainly some non-business reason for their resistance to themes.

It’s debatable, the one thing I hate the most is the fact that you’re forced to use the Gamepad to change settings, free up space or even set up an internet connection. My damn charger cable is cooked and it’s hard for me to get it to work, I have to bend the wires a certain way to get it to work

They had them for the New 3DS line. Dunno why they didn't bring them back. For the most part they were also $1 or $2 each theme, which came with custom folders/icons, a wallpaper (sometimes it animated), and song based on the theme.
