How did they expect this to go?

I think they cancelled Destiny 3 outright along with a bunch of other fake projects they started to make themselves look tastier for an acquisition (and it worked). Aside from Marathon I think the only other game they still have is "Gummibears" and who knows what that's going to turn out to be because they only thing known is its codename

they expected marathon to be out by now and be a smash hit (lol) which would allow them to keep destiny running in pseudo-maintenance-mode with tiny content updates for the diehards
the plagiarism fiasco fucked them over big time, now that marathon's dead in the water they have to recommit to destiny and convince people that their tiny content updates are worth the price of fully fledged expansions

I like Nightreign a lot but it's kind of hard to recommend. It's an exhausting game, especially if you suck.

both tarkov and hunt are pretty big. Problem is I'm sure execs miss the fact that these games are cheap and have years of refinement/community building built into it.

Marathon could easily be as popular as tarkov, it would take years of work post-release though

The idea was to be the first big AAA swing into the genre to gobble up the existing market and smash the genre into the mainstream, just like how Halo was the first to really make arena shooters "work" in the mainstream console market, or how Destiny was the first real attempt at creating a looter shooter as a live service. The problem is that Marathon took so long to come out, while also just looking kinda ass that the market they were hoping to release to doesn't really exist and what audience that does exist is already entrenched into whatever extraction shit they're into anyway.

it was back when it was focused on the descendants. now it's just a fucking shitpile with godawful boring content that is designed entirely on rerolling stats on guns. guns that are worthless unless they just dropped in the latest update because the game balancing is absolutely terrible. the gunplay is absolutely lousy and suffers from problems like your damage output being tied to your fps and the servers dropping inputs on swapping your weapons regularly

No, it's a shitty Warframe clone that's carried by the gooner skins. There's a reason every webm you see of it is just jiggle physics instead of actual gameplay.

not to mention arc raiders was getting a lot of positive buzz at the same time marathon was being raked through the coals for its stolen art + boring alpha, so anyone who actually is interested in a brand new extraction shooter is probably going to play that instead of waiting for marathon
