There are also multiple more modern acclaimed atmospheric black metal musicians that are a part of his sound lineage (like Paysage d'Hiver and Trhä). Even RYMtrannies have Filosofem as the highest rated black metal album of all time.
2. The guy is a well-spoken complete schizo, that's highly memeable due to his various antics on his (now deleted) youtube channel and twitter account, where he says completely unhinged shit and engages in meme-worthy activities.

He was already doing relatively well for himself in the bm circles before he murdered Euronymous. It's just that the church burnings, the murders, and the suicides made it into a massive international story. But his music is of very high quality and has stood the test of time. But it's still black metal, which means it's extremely harsh, unwelcoming, and inaccessible by design. If you want to know why, then I suggest going down the rabbit hole of the genre's origins, its multiple waves, and the resulting culture.
