Gen x here.
It's hard to describe how good Capcom CPS1 arcade games looked when they first came out.
Ghouls n Ghosts came out in 1988 and it's still to this day, one of the most beautiful 2d games ever made.
And arcade games ran on those RGB monitors so they looked even better.

Fucking nice. I'm honestly a little jealous of the SF2 boomers who got to play that shit in arcades. Seems like it was such a magical time. My local arcade has the game yeah but that shit obviously hit different when it released; nobody is coming around to play Street Fighter in an arcade anymore lmao

the colorful graphics are still pretty and fun to look at. the sounds, especially the CPS1 version, are legendary. there's a reason that when street fighter gets referenced in mainstream media 99% of the time it's based off SF2.

even recent manga both mainstream and obscure have characters obsessed with playing SF2 like Megami Terrace Cafe or revolve its entire plot around it like High Score Girl DASH and every single arcade is obligated to have at least one version of it
SF2's staying power is fucking unreal

Yeah same, SF2 was cool and all but MKII was the one that actually pulled me in. The blood, the edgy vibes, the fatalities-felt like I was getting away with something just playing it. Plus the arcade cabinets for MKII had this gritty atmosphere to them, like the machine itself was daring you to step up and get your ass handed to you.

This anon >>715123941 is pretty spot on. Iโ€™m 42 so perhaps a bit younger but I vividly remember my local mall arcade having both Final Fight and Street Fighter 2 and they just looked so much better than every other game in the arcade. The sound on those cabinets was also really nice. Anyway, my arcade had two SF2 cabinets and on weekends there were lines (yes, people did this) of kids waiting to get curb stomped by the older high school kid who knew all the moves and combos. I mostly stuck with Final Fight because I didnโ€™t wanna get BTFOd in front of everyone.

Does anyone actually buy these Capcom and SNK repo cabinets? I'm assuming they must because they keep making them but outside of FGC personalities on YouTube who I'm sure would get promo ones for free, who is their audience? I've never met anyone who actually owns one and they're fairly expensive so that'd price them out of South American audiences.

I've never played an arcade fighter. Growing up, we only had Pole Position, Pac Man, a random pinball machine, and Galaga. My first experience with Mortal Kombat was my dad kicking my ass at it on the SNES via UMK3.

What was the most expensive state of the art arcade game your arcade had?

For me it was Sky Pirates.

It was a VR game where you sat down in a seat that goes up and down as you follow your hot air ballon. you had to battle other players hot air ballons and you had a drop attack where you popped someones ballon from above

are they running actual hardware? if not i don't see the point, it's just a mame cabinet that is purposely limited in function. there's probably a few games i would buy real hardware for just to have them (and take up space next to a mame cabinet so it looks more like an arcade)

No, but I have an MVS with all those games plus Metal Slug 1 and X, FFRB2 and Neo Turf Masters. I also got a CPS2 with a converted copy of Progear and a phoenix copy of Puzzle Fighter II. Honestly, there aren't a lot of CPS2 games I would want compared to the MVS library besides one of the Dungeon and Dragon games.

Absolutely. I will own one of these one day.
Ill give you a weird acedote about Hydrothunder cabinets. Many years ago my dad took me on a crews ship for vacation. I was 12 i think. Made friends with a bunch of other kids on the ship and we had a whole gang running around all over the place. We hungout in the arcade alot as youd imagine. The arcade had 2 hydrothunder cabinets next to each other. I was screwing around and grabbed the throttle handles on both machines at once and took a pretty good shock. I told the other kids. It became a right of passage to get shocked atleast once.
One of my friends did something nuts though, he grabbed the thottles palm up, made his forarms muscles contract and he gripped onto the handles hard. He took the worst shock out of everyone. Actually flailed around for a second and was sent to the floor. I remember him telling me he saw blue while it was happening. Just a random childhood memory for me with a fav game

I miss working at the arcade so fucking bad bros I've never been more sociable and in my element... I'm a fuckin weirdo recluse now and I don't know how to fix it.

The hardcore gamers were always nice to hang around on Soul Calibur, Tekken, Maximum Tune and shit. You could like hook a Playstation controller to the arcade machine of Tekken and someone would always get "dunked on" for that. Forgot his name. Love Maximum Tune, play it whenever I can. Been years now though.

The kids were great and fun (no pedo). I remember my mother showed up one time for some reason and started sperging out that "you can't be acting this way this is a real professional environmentโ„ข" because I still had a box on my head some kid put there.

The parents though would start shit about "rigged games" and "scams" and that was always fun didn't like that bit I guess. Why are you even here all these good games and you just dump it all into Smokin Token and Cyclone thats a you problem.

I was able to 1cc House of the Dead 2, Gunbird 2 (which was a weird outlier it was only import and only shmup), and Time Crisis 2 and 4 by the time they finally closed.

I still keep the fact I "worked for Namco" on my resume, even if its pretty irrelevant now.

Kinda going through a midlife crisis at the moment. Why do I keep going on? I guess you can't jerk off and play video games when you are dead so theres that.

>>715136176
Goldstorm Pirates "just droppedโ„ข". Well it was "done" for awhile but it started shipping to North America this month.
