haven't played a halo since reach but if we're talking games specifically i think the worst of halo could be described as "mediocre", while sonic's worst is usually straight fucking cringe with god awful gameplay to boot.

Yes, even at its lowest point (SA1&2 GC Ports, 06 and Dark Brotherhood) Sonic put out some good games for the GBA and DS. Rush was great. Even the shitty games are memorable. The not so good ones like Black Knight had some positive aspects, namely the music.

Sonic Team launched shit at times followed by a good or decent game but they never had a period of inactivity as pronounced as 343i.
It's been almost 5 years since Infinite and the new one already looks like it is going to be shit.
Furthermore MS themselves are not promoting this nor the xbox brand anymore.
They are quietly letting the whole thing die.

Sonic 2006, sure but that is a memetic game. Infamous actually.
Sonic Forces, a fall from grace from Generations.
Sonic Lost World, it is too easy and feels like a bootleg Super Mario Galaxy but eh... I like it.
The Wii games and Unleashed are interesting since the quality is all over the place and lack polish but they are fun.

Halo 4, 5 and Infinite are boring as hell with Infinite being the better one of the 3 and yet there is nothing to say about except that it is barren.

The tv show was extraordinarily retarded but you can cover the whole thing in 10 minutes

Even people who hate watch it admit that is boring.

It depends, next game is a campaign-only ful Halo CE remake that will extend to a Halo 2 and Halo 3 remake, the second game is a multiplayer-only Halo game, and the third game is a campaign-only indirect sequel to Halo Infinite which is currently only in pre-production compared to the other two projects. Halo Studios is leading development, third parties in the US and EU are developing the games.

One was a cultural event and defined a genre

Halo's problem were being dated from 2001-2009, being a shitting COD stand-in from 2010-2015, and sticking with the old formula while trying to be open world and a live-service MP game all at the same time. Splitting this would fix the problem. Of course, the MP is probably screwed since it can't do anything to save it, but the singleplayer games would flourish. No more campaign and multiplayer holding each other back.

Chief has the boring kind of autism with people talking about the books and expanded universe details that were never mentioned in the bungie games with the OC making ending up being on the Covenant side (usually elite OCs) and Spartans.
It doesn't help that Halo didn't nearly half as much stuff Sonic has to play and mess around with (comics like archie the cartoons and anime among others), Sonic is simple at the end of the day while Halo requires a bit more of work.

Halo's dark age killed it as a relevant franchise on an industry scale. Like, completely. Despite Infinite having some good steps, it fucked up other essential ones, so they scrapped ALL of its long term plans for some short term profit to fuck off to UE5 and hope to start fresh with a company rebrand. And they probably haven't learned a fucking thing.
I doubt it will really keep living all that much longer besides as a recognizable IP, because the value is dead to anyone but nostalgic fucks like myself. Meanwhile Sonic went through hell and came back on the other side despite the fact that it REALLY shouldn't have against all odds. We dunno if Halo will get that chance again, but with Microsoft's pants-shitting as of late, I again doubt it.

It wouldn't work on the count that the devs keep thinking the spin-offs don't need Master Chief when Halo's universe is uninteresting without him. Many series knew this and always had their main characters be the star of the spin-off games, but Halo kept trying to be Warhammer 40K when that series never had one major main character and has multiple main characters. Until Microsoft figures this one thing out, spin-offs for Halo will never work.

They probably have, split off the campaign and multiplayer will benefit the campaign side of Halo greatly. UE5 is also built for PC meaning Halo will become more like a PC shooter something that was kind of starting with Infinite. Steve Downes is like 74 years old and I don't think they can just AI his voice forever despite him agreeing to it, so either Chief will be recast like Sam Fisher eventually, or they have to retire the character. The only way shit will ever start to recuperate is to basically start anew and freshen up Master Chief, which has a huge assortment of risks involved, or in my opinion, taking what Reach put down and focusing on a custom character that bumps chests with relevant / ongoing cast members. Don't have to make them talk, they could be Rookie 2.0, or maybe go full Commander Shepard, it ain't my place to figure, but trying to replace Chief with other major characters that all suck has not worked. The risk is already there, it's called Doom, just go all-in on the power fantasy and make Chief an unstoppable badass since that's currently all-the-rage, right now. I wish Bungie leaned more into Master Chief's power fantasy after Halo CE, at least they tried to get back to that with Halo 3. 343 wanted to turn Halo into Call of Duty and wanted to deconstruct both Halo and Master Chief. The most important factor to Chief's character is that he's a soldier. A soldier you may not see the face of, but a soldier nonetheless. He mourns the loss of his comrades and friends, but he still gets back up to make sure it wasn't for nothing. Sonic is an impulse loner with an ego that runs really fast and loves adrenaline rushes and yet brings his foot down when others need his help. Both of them are beacons of hope and yet the way they bring that hope is rather different and thus can lead to different writing styles.
