>>715125057 (OP)Good character design includes conveying a character through their appearance.
They can be subtle, sure, but there's an art to hitting just the right spot to showing what's inside.
>And truth lies in your heart. The contents of a person's heart shapes their appearance, and new images will change their hearts and their forms.From Evangelion;
It's something that holds true even in reality, which is why those guys who have never touched a girl are invariably greasy, have awful unkempt facial hair, ugly glasses and wear some cringe anime T-shirt. You manifest your true self with your appearance, which is why everyone likes fit people - that dedication and self-sacrifice is admirable on a genetic level.
In the case of Persona 4 this really applies to someone like Kanji, who dresses as if he wants to push people away, but is always ACTING in a situation where he's helping people or asking for help. Naoto also applies; although she wants to "be a male detective" her ACTIONS show that she wants to be a feminine girl for a man who will do everything she can but better.
Of course fictional characters are always far more exaggerated than real life, but that's kind of the point (and the fun) of the medium.
