Crowds aren't "retarded", they behave a certain way, they are predictable. A game community is the same, it's a large group of people and thus is predictable and if it behaves in a dumb way it's because the game funnels them that way with its design. See it as a river of water, it doesn't flow randomly, it takes the easiest path.
People try to win, they get obliterated by 13+ years veterans and fps pros, so they join zergs because that's their only way to stay alive for more than a minute. That's the fundamental problem: the skill ceiling and the difference in performance between good players and bad players are too big so bad players don't have fun and leave and the game dies.
It reminds me of a study, on dogs or primates I don't remember, that observed that during playtime, the slightly older and stronger subject would lose on purpose so the younger would continue playing with him. Even animals understand this naturally.
