i played this for the first time last year and was extremely impressed. i borrowed a friends copy of the country returns and was surprised by how good that one was too. i thought for sure it would just be a beta of tropical freeze, but aside from the music being more boring it was every bit as fun as TF imo.

I was lucky enough to find it a few years ago super cheap at a second hand store. I wasn't even looking at the games, my mum found it and wanted it because she loved playing the arcade Donkey Kong as a kid.

I bought this game on launch day for the Wii U and I still haven't beaten it in 2025. I still think it's probably the best DK game ever. Just haven't gotten around to actually finishing it. I bought the Switch port and everything. Hoping for a Switch 2 resolution bump soon.

Part of me wishes they had made one more game to make it a trilogy, keeping parity with the Rare games. But that's just my autism. I still need to play the 3DS/Switch levels from Returns but I had a lot more fun with Tropical Freeze. The bosses are noticeably more challenging, particularly the polar bear and final boss. Even the owl was a bit tricky. I miss good boss fights in Nintendo games

Mario 64 is so fucking trash compared to Crash.

>absolutely atrocious camera constantly getting stuck on terrain, spazzing out, facing the wrong direction, refusing to go where you want it to
>slippery and awkward controls, especially in underwater and snow levels
>2D Mario's momentum and physics work in a 2D environment where you always have a perfect view and perspective of the action; it's significantly worse in a 3D environment where you are constantly fighting the camera and there are fundamental limitations to perspective/depth perception
>these momentum and physics are especially egregious when the movement is relative to aforementioned awful automatic camera that refuses to go where you want
>constantly boots you out after every star and makes you retread each stage a half dozen times all the way from the beginning of the stage with a tiny stupid piecemeal change
>dial a combo system for platforming
>overall level/enemy/hazard design are extremely basic and boring
>constant easter egg hunt for random bullshit grows old very quick
It feels like a glorified fucking tech demo for 3D movement. You need fucking 6 inch thick nostalgia goggles to still convince yourself it holds up today

I remember when metroid fags were seething because Retro made this instead of a Prime game, they ruined the hype and excitement around the game. That along with Nintendo using the game awards just to advertise playable cranky when people expected something bigger. It did not get the love it deserved.

I got it when it launched on Wii U. Couldn't believe the scores it was getting, it was absolutely filtering journalists and it was clear they were ass-blasted by the challenge. It just wasn't a great time to be a 2D platformer on a console with mixed reception, I guess.

It didn't help that even the switch port was advertised largely for the "New Funky Mode" for babies, AND they went and delisted the cheaper Wii U version after charging more for the switch port. Nintendo's PR and marketing since the middle of the Wii era has been so insanely fucking bad it's unreal. I think Monsanto can curate a better public image.

i've played many games but i have not seen a single 2D platformer that holds a candle in terms of being this perfect mix of fun, variety, presentation and replayability (time trials are very fun and demanding) as tropical freeze.

truly one of modern nintendo's crown jewels, and sadly, a really overlooked at that. the perfect amalgamation of what made DKC1/2/Returns so good, with none of the bad traits.

also david wise at his best https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95HuSMQSUVo

It pisses me off how much people hype up Wonder. They literally just took NSMB and made the characters more expressive and people acted like it was the greatest thing ever. It doesn't even do things that much better than NSMB, and in some ways worse. I hated how the Koopalings were used for 3 games in a row, but at least they were better bosses than the few garbage Bowser Jr. fights in Wonder. The levels were also too reliant on finding secrets and slowing down the pace, most levels were a joke if you just ran through it like a normal Mario level. Music was really mediocre too aside from a few like the Metal Mario remix. No one even talks about the game anymore, it was forgotten in a few weeks.

Crash 1 is fun in the beginning then suddenly more than half the levels are shitty sidescrolling levels with unfun precise jumps. Crash 2 and 3 were solid. They still barely utilize the full potential of a 3D game like Mario 64 did. Mario 64 was so revolutionary and had so much depth that people still play it today, including zoomers who weren't even born when it came out, while Crash is just a simple little charming platformer that just makes people go "remember HOOGABAGADA? haha."

Wonder is OK. 100%ed it.
It's fun but has a lot of problems. the elephant looks and feels bad.
Marios voice is dog shit so I was forced to play as Luigi.
Mini-characters have horrible models (yet again)
It's too easy.
some of the visual look cheap and flat in huge contrast to others.
movement feels laggy and slippery but the game is never complex enough for it to be a problem in anything other than feel.
I didn't realize I needed to be buying those useless sign posts until the end.

He's started to play too and funky mode is actually perfect for him. Kind of pisses me off that the switch port of returns was mailed in because I wish it had a funky mode too for my son's sake. Don't worry the final boss is by far the worst thing in the game.
I didn't find it hard but the hitboxes are so stingy and for a fast paced game the fight is so FUCKING SLOW and 90% of it is just waiting.
I was so fucking annoyed just waiting for openings to actually do damage. the first time I missed 2 shots in a row and was not in the mood for more fucking waiting so I turned the game off and didn't beat it til the next day.

Ryujinx Is basically Identical but the character models have weird noses (inconsistent with the cutscene designs) and it also has funky Kong.

Both games look infinitely better with Anti-aliasing and other graphic enhancements so you really want to play them on PC and not shitty nintendo hardware.

Crash N.Sane Trilogy sold 20m copies you fucking shitbrained tendie.

Crash (the first three at least) is still absolute fucking peak when it comes to level/hazard focused platforming, some of the best, most creative, challenging, memorable, replayable stage designs, and just oozes charm. Absolutely timeless masterpiece. Right up there with the Kong games at the peak of the genre.

Mario 64 is something different entirely. The levels are boring playgrounds full of gay easter egg hunts where you basically have to make your own fun by dicking around with the movement system because the level design and hazards alone are dull as fuck. Also the camera is absolute dogshit and it makes you retread each stage 7 times because it kicks you out after every star. What a shit game, only speedtroons and autists enjoy it.

Seriously? An entire tenth of a second, that's insane. Is there proof of this?
And for that matter, that's pretty bad for the Wii U version, too.

50ms is pretty damn low for modern console games. Melee on CRT is like 60ms for reference

As an early 3D game, the devs were kinda holding everything together with duct tape. As a result, Mario 64 has a bunch of bugs, jank, and weird physics quirks that allows you to do a bunch of retarded tech shit, just look at autists like pannen who sit there and break the game.

Crash is more fun as an actual fucking VIDEOGAME, not some spergy toolset for autismos to tinker with. You master the mechanics, learn the stages, get 100%, move on, replay it every now and then. Just a great time, satisfying and challenging level design, very charming artstyle and design.

Whereas subhuman retard 64 autists sit there and try to do the most retarded off-the-wall gamebreaking shit. If Mario 64 were a competently developed game, not full of bugs and jank, speedrunning interest would be way lower. Also Nintendo games in general tend to draw aspies like flies to shit. The levels, enemies, bosses, camera, pacing and design basically don't matter at all to them, the levels are just a canvas for their autistic shitflinging experimentation

If that were the case some broke piece of shit like Big Rigs: over the road racing would be more popular, because of all the ways you can break the physics.
It's as if there's a good game in Mario 64.

Good platformers(like TF) have a certain theme/gimmick each level. Long levels makes them overstay their welcome.
So its better to have 100 short levels then 60 levels that are twice as long.
See: every indie platformer

The themed levels fucking sucked, especially the shitty jungle juice levels. The flow and visual language of the levels was butchered to shoehorn in some stupid "story" of the level.

The best levels were the K-levels and the secret world, as well as the levels that just had theming rather than trying to tell a story.

It's funny that Tropical Freeze is easier than Returns (Minecarts now have health) and Returns is easier than Country (You can take two hits without a barrel, compared to it being a one-hit kill) and yet Tropical Freeze STILL filters a ton of people. The easiest one.

lmfao shut the fuck up you dumb faggot, such a weak cope. everyone that has a brain can just play mario 64 for 5 minutes and understand immediately the skill ceiling that exists with the depth in mario's movement. no one's buying your shit just because you try to coat it in as many annoying fucking insults as possible. speak like a real fucking human, christ.

Aw, that's cute. Returns is quite a bit harder than TF so it really could've used a casual mode I think, but yeah, it was a bit lazy. Should've gotten a small team at Retro to handle it imo.

Me and a long distance friend make it a point to beat Tropical Freeze every time we visit each other. Sadly the last two times we didn't have the time to do it.

I literally played 1 and 2 before returns HD and you're flat out wrong. Most of the original trilogy is easy minus 1 or 2 levels towards the end but those levels do not compare to the hardest levels in returns or freeze. Freeze starts getting difficult at the second world

The point is that movement is all Mario 64 has you retarded shitbrained tendie.

The level design, hazard design, enemy and boss design, camera, gay easter egg hunts, artstyle, constant padding of making you repeat levels 7 times, etc are all dogshit.

That's why ALL autistic tendie manchild retards can talk about is
>MUH MOVEMENT!!
>MUH SPEEDTROONING!!!
because that's literally all the game has you fucking retard. It's only appealing if you're an autistic speedtrooner who loves jumping around like a fag doing gay easter egg hunts in empty, boring ass playgrounds

And yes, most of the mechanics that the retarded autists sperg out over are unintentional jank from being Nintendo's first 3D platformer. There is a reason Nintendo totally abandoned Mario 64's style and copied Crash with Galaxy/3D World.

2 for me. I like Tropical Freeze well enough but have never seen what others see in it (and I owned a Wii U so it's not like I didn't have an incentive to big it up). I'd take most of the other platformers mentioned in this thread over it.

You are a fucking moron if you can't understand how playing a level for mastery to complete it quickly and abusing a dozen different frame-perfect bugs to jump around like a little fag to collect easter eggs in a dull, empty playground are fundamentally different.

Time trials and speedtrooning are a whole different ballpark of autism

yes it feels like shit.
it's an ugly design, it has ugly unsatisfying animations.
I don't want to play as this shit. I just want to play as my character I picked.
