Passion project from a Japanese solo dev that was in development for 15 years, it's best described as a 2d action castlevania but with much smoother combat, the story is batshit insane and the combat system is deep enough and addictive while art and music (mostly license free music) is great.
The dlc gives you even more of the combat but is different enough to justify its existence.

The character being an extremely powerful mage who helped defeat the big bad 100 years ago is necessary for the setup of "After Journey's End" and all of the nice little ideas it touches on like people forgetting the faces of the heroes and the stories being embellished and not lining up with Frieren's memories. She "hides her powerlevel" but the primary reason for this is so they can have their comfy slice of life journey with anecdotes about the passage of time, not so that they can do a shonen climax. I like Original War, got it when I was still at elementary school and remember how me and other few friends tried to figure out how to beat next missions. Many years later, as adult, I managed to beat both campaigns without loading a save, on highest difficulty and doing all optional objectives. Simply best RTS/RPG hybrid I encountered, very good scripted missions, active pause, really show how much love developers put in it. Nobody will even try to make similar game anymore.

Modding scene is actually still active but suffer from usual problems of such niche scenes - each modded campaign is more or less variation of existing one (or scrapped third one) and in most cases with pumped INSANE difficulty to keep those autists engaged. To give some example, one user complained about difficulty in one of more popular mod campaign, where even mission designed to "catch breath" between two harder ones was turned into literal bloodbath. Modder threw out autistic rant and claimed that at this point he SHOULD memorize all weapons ranges (likely in pixels) and thus be able to solve the mission. I like a lot of games. I don't play what I don't like.
Sometimes I'll get a game and not like it after a bit of playing because it just wasn't for me or I wasn't feeling it.

For me the biggest problem is that a lot of games seem to be too long. Especially action RPG types. Hard to complete them because at a certain point I've seen everything the game can throw at me mechanically and now the rest of it is just repeating those mechanics over and over for the sake of a story or something.

But on the same token I find myself sinking 1000 hours in the likes of zomboid, terraria, little indie rouge likes...
