Sabin and Edgar is objectively the best charaters in the game for how busted they are for mob fights and how early/often you need to use them.
I wish Seltzer was better because his story is one of the better ones but i'm not a fan of randomness in rpgs. Cyan is another one I wish was better but his special attacks are just bad and boring to wait for.

I liked Locke.

I always liked Mog in battle. A Genomancer/Dragon who can hit max defense and be rendered unkillable if you pair him with the paladin shield and a safety bit.

Green hair is always the best.

Favorite character is probably Kefka overall, but if you mean among my party members I'd say either Cyan or Sabin. Cyan for his character arc and Sabin for his personality and banter.

Favorite esper is a tough one, as I haven't played in a long time. I always thought Maduin looked cool. Also Tritoch and Odin. If Terra counts in her Esper form then she is easily my favorite Esper.

I'd say Dissidia is the worst thing that ever happened to Kefka with regards to his design and characterization becoming way too far with his goofy and demented aspects, completely overshadowing the snarky, haughty, cruel Court Magician vibe he had in the original FF6. I like the headcanon that Kefka is the reason Terra dresses like a gypsy dancer.

Kefka is the first Magitek Knight, Gestahl dumps Terra on him to see if he can make something useful of her innate magical ability, Kefka doesn't wish to be seen with some wretched little ragamuffin so he dolls her up. Eventually he gets tired of trying to turn her into a psychopathic killing machine and just slave crowns her, problem solved. And she never stops dressing like a dancer.

I’m playing through for the first time and I don’t like it, currently in Sabin’s ministory (met Cyan and fought a ghost train which was honestly the highlight up to this point)

ATB puts me into this frenzy where I have to click actions asap and it’s weird to play a turn based game I can’t put down for a sec mid-battle, and I’m aware I can “pause” by going into the spell/item menu but that feels weird. And in that frenzy I don’t notice when people are low on health since the total Hp isn’t shown, I just might catch if one is in the double digits. Just feels kinda fucking bad all around and I’m sure it was cool at the time but between Sabin’s input commands, very weird event triggers (I tried leaving and going “south” to find the Veldte because the prompt didn’t show to jump down that cliff), shit like that cave section where you switched between Moogles to protect Terra… I dunno, somehow there is too much going on for me to feel like I can really strategize and engage with the mechanics. Apologies to anyone that’s a fan of this, I’ll at least go until I can get Espers

If you like FFVI, give this a read if you haven't already. The creator of Sabin & Edgar, Tanaka is my favorite bits, explaining how serious it is for them to tell anyone their middle names. Even Locke doesn't know Edgar's but Relm does.
I adore that they even put plot points to little things you might not notice, like how when you unequip Setzer's bandana, he'll never put it on again due to deciding that Locke wears it better.

Kefka is my favorite character because he's literally me. Out of playable party members maybe Terra/Tina is my favorite, but only if she has green hair, if not then Locke. Gameplay wise, I'm partial to Mog, he's just fun to use. I don't really have a favorite esper, but I'll say Maduin, I like his design and his mini story arc, even if he's dumb.

I don't even remember what most of them do. I barely used them because of how easy the game is.

I like VI a lot, but it doesn't really live up to the reputation it has, at least in my opinion. In terms of SNES JRPGs I like Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest V, and Final Fantasy V more. In terms of Final Fantasy, I prefer VII and VIII, on top of the aforementioned V. Chrono Trigger in particular does the whole end of the world plot better than FFVI did.
Also, I really don't care for Amano's art. It really doesn't fit my view of how these sprites would translate into artwork. It worked for the first 3 games, was tolerable for IV, but I really dislike his takes on the casts of V and VI.

Currently in World of Ruin in the T-Edition and came to a realization that Setzer is really great in it

Setzer is underrated, by the time you acquire him the cast is already getting pretty big and I think people overlook him until he becomes one of the first 4 in World of Ruin
He also has the prestige of being the first Gambler class in FF history which while can seem unreliable is as fun as it is risky, along with a very cool aesthetic in general.

In Chrono Trigger it's about going through time to prevent the tragedy from ever happening in the first place

I particularly love rom hacks that give Celes more utility by making Runic more useful than a handful in boss fights throughout the game. Really loving T-Edition so far.

In terms of favorite Esper, I don't think I have one. Never really viewed them as more than spell learning, stat rocks.

I got tired of correcting people about it myself. You ever played Final Fantasy 14 and do the Omega raids you see Kefka dropping pots and pans on players for "hyperdrive" like what the absolute fuck is this bullshit. It's because he gets compared to the joker and now suddenly that means clown because they saw Amono's art and white makeup suddenly he's a whole circus.

I think part of it is FF7 vs FF6 arguments relying on Kefka vs Sephiorth to sandbag the imagery of either villain (momma boy vs clown) and the Japanese inability to understand nuance. I don't even think the Japanese had a real idea of what he was, and we see some examples with FF9's Zorn and Thorn or Oscha from Final Fantasy Unlimited.

Yeah I agree. Kefka was kind of a bumbler at times in the first half of the game, and had some goofiness and some spontaneity to him but he wasn't a try-hard jester like it seems recent reimaginings have him acting like. He was just cruel and found evil things hilarious and no appreciation for life, but I think he'd have have pic-related reactions to seeing himself acting like a twat in Dissidia/FFXIV

There's too many major characters and no clear protagonist that stands out ahead of them all, so it feels like a bunch of inconsequential characters are constantly interrupting your journey.

Yuffie is seen as annoying to many FF7 players and as an unneeded distraction from the plot; FF6 has an entire cast of Yuffies.

I think it's cope to be honest. The competency of Kefka cannot be understated and I don't mean this for his "finale" but moreso how he even got there. I don't people want to come to terms with a character with a nihilistic regard for life as someone capable of taking it.

Doma isn't our first interaction with the goof since that would be Figaro and he burned the castle forcing them to go under the sand, but it's an intimate demonstration of his command ability and problem solving. Kefka not only berates his underlings and view them as fodder, but he had an entire scene dedicated to poisoning the water supply of Doma which is unheard of in anything prior. There are instances where places that get erased in FF5 come back after Exdeath is dead and the void is sealed. Doma doesn't come back. He committed a war crime because to him it's easier than it is engage the people in Doma, and I don't even know if the Emperor gave him the idea or he acted on his own accord; but this is where it gets ominous, he wouldn't be in the position he was in with Geshtal otherwise. The emperor knows this because it might not be the first time either.

Sure he's been bested at Narshe but then you see him again in the Magiteck lab siphoning espers and probably gaping Shiva throwing her and Ifirit in a pit of dead espers. He knows of the warring triad, his ambitions are already said, and he even understood the magicite transference as it happened when you meet Cid. He even plants doubt in the group with Lock and Celes. He uses his magicite knowledge to neutralize espers in Thamasa and forces them to crystalize. The goofy antics and laugh distracts from what is a severely competent foe and his betrayel of the emperor highlights his own mechanical knowledge of magic involving the warring triad's position and negate/channeling fields. I think it makes people uncomfortable someone that competent and adaptive is wearing makeup and laughing.

Shadow goes underappreciated because it's really easy to miss out on his backstory. I don't remember spending a lot of time in Inn's (it's easy enough to heal/rest outside of them) and least of all with Shadow in the party and that's the only way you get snippets of his past is by sleeping in Inns with him in the party. But it's genuinely really cool and it's nice they at least set up hints outside of those flashbacks like with Interceptor getting along with and recognizing Relm despite Shadow's warning he's not friendly.

Meteor kind of compensates by ignoring split casting penalty which lets you hit a lot of targets at no downsides. That and as difficult as it is to get all eight dragons I think it's still easier to obtain (or at least to find) than Bahamut/Ragnarok

At least the dragons you know they're out there and if you're thorough it isn't hard to find them all. I got all eight without looking them up. I did not know Ragnarok as a magicite even existed without looking that up. Chalk that up to my being less than experienced or didn't explore as hard as I could but at least in my case I found the dragons first.

Japan didn't really have a concept of Kefka in the way the US did. He was partially a different character in the Japanese script, it was his English translation that gave him the Joker parallels.

That said, it also wasn't overdone. You could tell he was a sadist and a nihilist but he wasn't completely goofy like a clown. He was more like someone completely socially maladjusted who laughed at inappropriate times.

It might be unpopular, but I really miss Opera Omnia. It's been the only game that consistently was giving homage to II-VI, including all the others. The writers would always pair characters that have similar arcs or plot points to give their takes on whatever another character was going through, and it was great. It was clear they knew how to write the characters and were fans of the whole series.
They have an arc where all the monks get together to make a tourney and they pair the 3 big favorites together (Yang, Sabin, Tifa) and have them win. Fucking loved that chapter.
There's a part where Edgar, trying to get the Type-0 girls to open up to him, tells them his middle and and it's the only character inconsistency I ever notice.

The five protagonist's character expressions are actually a pretty great addition in the IOS version, because they used the FFVI expressions and you can tell when Bartz, Faris, Lenna, Galuf and Krile use Locke, Edgar, Sabin, Terra and someone else I can't remember's expressions. It's a pretty cool upgrade from the original SNES one in that regard, since FFV essentially uses the same sprite style as IV SNES.

I actually sat down and used Locke in my recent playthrough of pixel remaster because historically I barely ever used him at all beyond forced segments. Short answer: To remove her hesitation.

Long answer: They couldn't force her to develop a taste for blood. Terra would do as she was told, but she still hesitated to wholesale slaughter people with her magic. In the scene where Kefka puts the slave crown on her, the VERY FIRST thing you see her ordered to do is mercilessly burn an entire company of Imperial troopers to death. This gives you an immediate clue as to why it was needed, because that is something she otherwise would have held back on. So even after being raised within the Empire to be a magic weapon, Terra was still too damned soft hearted.

I also believe that Gestahl signed off on it. Anything to make her a more effective weapon for the empire.

Same, I kind of lost interest towards the end, but I still lament the fact that we never got the final parts of the story in global and that SE never bothered to make an offline version.
There were so many character moments and interactions that helped flesh them out, expand on their personal story and/or show them in situations that wouldn't have been possible on their original games, it really helped me appreciate certain characters more and made me more interested in playing the games that I had yet to play or hadn't looked much into.

My sentiments exactly. It really helped you see things from even the rougher or lesser characterized players. And as you said, giving interest to games you either dropped or never got around to, to further appreciate them.

Maybe one day Squee will get their heads out of their asses and release an offline version with the missing JP story that finishes it up. It definitely doesn't paint any of the Final Fantasys in a negative light, and utilizing FFX's turn based combat really is a fun way to enjoy Dissidia.

The scripts for Mobile and Pixel Remaster are based off the GBA script, so I doubt it'd be in either of them. All that said, I don't know how to trigger the lines either. I've watched videos of different versions with Cyan in the party at that point, and the line never triggers. I'd say it's a bug, for it to persist through remakes is mind boggling.

It still is bothersome, as just like the opera segment is Celes finally letting her guard down and showing that she's more than a weapon or traitor and that the Returners are her friends, the battle of Narshe is supposed to be a moment where characters like Celes and Cyan are fighting for their lives side by side and gaining camaraderie for one another, and that line really fucks with that.

Celes' denial to the accusation feels genuine, and later when Locke/Celes meet again in Albrook she's clearly very hurt by his previous lack of faith in her and Locke also regrets doubting her at all. I think both of these make less sense if Celes really was a spy all along.
