just replace the switches and it will last forever. this is an extremely easy process that will teach you new skills and realistically anyone can easily accomplish by following along with a youtube video or photo guide.

Started off with a Razer Lachesis in like 2007 or so. Loved that sexy beast. Still werks to this day. Then I moved to an EVGA Torq X10 in 2014 (my buddy and I both got them with a cool mouse pad, also he had a CM Storm Trooper and I have a Storm Stryker), but the chinsy plastic broke while I was trying to take it apart in 2019 (poor build design). Luckily I had a Razer Naga HEX on backup that I found on sale (I wanted more side buttons) about four years prior. That was fine until one day it stopped working. I dunno what happened. Perhaps a component went bad when my PSU shat the bed, but the software wouldn't recognize it and I couldn't get the side buttons to work. Anyway, luckily I had another mouse on backup, a Steel Series Rival that my wife got me for my birthday. The software is atrocious and the buttons are crude and insensitive (I get a lot of failed clicks), but it has three side buttons and it has some kind of macro program. I need to get another mouse for when this one breaks.

>Moral of the story
Expensive mice break, too.
Always have a mouse on backup.
>To answer your question
You need a specific functionality that other, cheaper mice on the market do not provide (sensitivity, buttons, software) or you are autistic (possibly retarded as well) and you need something with a high(er) quality fit & finish.

>There's an optical sensor in most wheels these days
This is deeply funny, because the exact opposite is true. All wheels USED to be optical, and they would fail after the heat death of the universe. All "modern" mice have started using mechanical scroll encoders, which break within a year or two, because people were starting to get too annoyed about the broken mouse buttons so they pivoted to fucking up another vital component to ensure the zoomers buy a new mouse every 2 years.

The reason to pay more than 30 bucks for a mouse is to buy one made in the first world by white people.

My mouse was made by a small company who provide mice for industry work, as in the kind of shit where you can't fuck up the circuit on purpose for "muh planned obsolescence".

If you are buying CONSUMER grade hardware in the modern day, you are completely fucking braindead. Big companies have spent the past 30 years trying their very hardest to make products that just barely work for long enough that you're forced to buy a new one the second your consumer protection runs out, and they have gotten very good at it.

I'm currently using a Lamzu mouse but those are expensive and I only had it for a few months so I dont know how long it will last. Previous ones were ROCCAT but the company doesnt exist anymore and while they never developed double clicking the wheel started to jump within three months. Optical switches arent that rare anymore there should be plenty of options.
