I do this for old emulated games where reloading induces a 50 second loading screen, or you have to reload from the main menu. basically, I just create a save state at save points in the game instead of saving at them manually.

PS2 shipped with 8MB memory sticks, you can't save shit on that so you have to shave off as many variables from the save file as you can.
