All those continues are there so you have limited practice to build up for the eventual one credit clear run.

I do this for old emulated games where reloading induces a 50 second loading screen, or you have to reload from the main menu. basically, I just create a save state at save points in the game instead of saving at them manually.

The quickness of the saving and loading doesn't matter, they could include it within the game. Later Tomb Raider games ditched the save crystal from the first games console iteration, and games like Crusader No Remorse had saving anywhere. The more variables you have in your save file, the bigger the fucking file. PS2 shipped with 8MB memory sticks, you can't save shit on that so you have to shave off as many variables from the save file as you can. Quick saving where enemy location/behavior needs to be saved as well as player location is a huge waste of space.
