I fully recognize and acknowledge that Wind Waker is short, padded, and somewhat content anemic. In terms of items and dungeon mechanics, it is also not very complex or involved and doesn't move the formula much past what OoT and MM offered.

But honestly I find that I just don't care. I don't think I would ever say this about any other game, but Wind Waker is one of my favorite games based on an intangible vibe alone. Everything from the artstyle to the sound design I just find so fun and appealing, and while the majority of the ocean is empty space with a few islands good for only rupees, a heart piece, or a sidequest, I have never felt a sense of adventure quite like Wind Waker gave me when I played it first on Gamecube and even still to this day. Sailing around to that soundtrack, before I knew the map like the back of my hand and everything was new to discover... I genuinely have been coveting that wind ever since. I've played Sly 3's pirate chapter, I've played Black Flag, I've played Dredge, I've even tried playing Sea of Thieves solo (horrible experience), all just to try and capture that experience again and none have come close.

There are WIP mods and hacks to try to bring Hyrule to the surface and expand the landmass, but all I would ever want is just more to see on the Great Sea. There really is not a single experience in gaming even to this day remotely like what Wind Waker offers, as flawed as it is.

Take a shot every time someone says sense of adventure when talking about wind waker and wind waker in particular. They’re all adventure games but for some reason people like to say “sense of adventure” as a set phrase for this game. When did this meme start? You see the same thing for Metroid. People like to say “dread and isolation.” I just like exploring and getting cool power ups I have never felt dread playing Metroid

It's not the best but it's not the worst. It's pretty good.
Really we should be encouraging Nintendo to try new things with their franchises.
Fanboyism in the form of people who scream and cry when the Zelda game is t just like the last one they played is what stagnates and kills franchises.

I want them to make a new side scroller Zelda like Zelda 2.

Fuck you.

You're just autistic. Every Zelda is an "adventure" game, but seafaring has been one of the most significant aspects of real-world exploration and discovery while simultaneously being extremely and woefully underrepresented in gaming. When people talk about Wind Waker or even Pokemon Gen 3 giving them a sense of adventure over other games, it is because those games give you a large ocean to explore and discover things in, even if they are not significant in terms of gameplay.

If you want to play a game where you go on a high seas adventure, your options are startlingly limited and Wind Waker happens to both be one of those options and despite not being very good, also one of the best.

>I fully recognize and acknowledge that Wind Waker is short, padded, and somewhat content anemic. In terms of items and dungeon mechanics, it is also not very complex or involved and doesn't move the formula much past what OoT and MM offered.
But at the same time it doesn't shit on the formula it's trying to recreate like TP does, and it doesn't neglect the "second half pivot" like Majora's Mask does, so ultimately Wind Waker is the only true OoT-clone they ended up making.

Twilight Princess has a lot of the structurals down but it just can't tell its own story worth a damn. it starts from the wrong end, and gets Ganondorf's plot confusedly destroyed halfway through the game, and it feels even more segmented than OoT and Wind Waker do.

OoT, ALttP and Wind Waker are the only Zeldas that are like, "You clear 3 dungeons, then something majestic happens", and then after that is like "Now the context is different, and Link has to become the hero who can defeat the bad guy." and then it builds to a finale that cements the underlying themes of the adventure. In OoT's case the themes were Time and "Growing Up", and in WW's case it's about something similar, but where it's more about Tradition and how adults impose their own childhood's values unto children despite the context of those values being lost due to time.

TP on the other hand feels much less mature in its prose, and kinda ends up being a wishy washy story about "Responsibility" or something, but where Midna is the only character that really shines. Skyward Sword and the DS Zeldas, and Minish Cap, is where Zelda narratives became self-indulgently childish in their own worlds instead of having a narrative agenda.

Breath of the Wild is sort of in the same vein as Skyward Sword narratively, where there's more text than ever, but they're saying way less with it. And its insistence on the "Champions" is never earned.

It had objectively great and very unique music. The style of the game is unique unique and very memorable, and gave you a very fresh take on enemies and environments you had seen in the franchise before in a way that still felt fitting. The protagonist despite not talking is still very likable due to how expressive his appearance is. The combat is fun, not the hardest game in the franchise but it isn’t a total pushover either. The story is fairly simple but it gives the player very clear and relatable motivation to leave his home to save his loving little sister, and it has some memorable moments in particular the last scene with ganondorf. The sailing and islands was also a very unique and interestng and innovative take on making an open world game overall a stellar entry in the series irregardless of nostalgia glasses

Only game I've been disappointed with was Twilight Princess.
There's no fucking energy in that game. I actively want to sleep while playing it.
I suspect because there was no energy or enthusiasm from the people who made it and that would make sense if it was made simply because people cried about windwaker being a bright cartoony game when they were hoping for something dark and gritty like a darker OOT or MM.

TP's dungeons are the best part of it. The overworld is boring, the characters outside of Midna are forgettable, the Ganon plot sucks, and segments like the hunt for the sky map pieces are just needless busywork that deserve as much hate as WW's triforce hunt.

The dungeons though and especially Arbiter's Grounds are stellar if a little too long.

The reefs and the three triangle islands combined make up 9 out of 49 tiles in the Great Sea. Out of those, the three triangle islands are important to progression so they are important to find.

6. 6 reefs. The rest of the islands either contain sidequests, optional content for Heart Pieces, are important for the Triforce Hunt, or contain either mini-dungeons or full story dungeons. They aren't incredible but it's disingenuous to pretend that half the islands are reefs.
