its a failed mess of a game, MTX out the ass, aspects are a horrible feature, borrowed power slop every "season" that exists for no reason other than to sell a new battlepass, the story is barebones and yet still full of filler so they can cut up and dripfeed the story over years of expansions (as if anyone gives a fuck) they cant even figure out leaderboards, classes are terrible, skill trees are terrible, gameplay balance is fucked and clearly untested

Season 9 has a stupid fucking mechanic. I quit on day one (and I've been one of the biggest supporters). I might come back in 10, but 9 is almost as bad as 4 for me.

Never played an ARPG, the build autism intrigues me however. Diablo IV is free on PS+ but I’ve only heard negative things about it. Is it worth trying out or will it sour my perception of the genre as a newcomer?

then you should absolutely not play d4 lmfao. There is zero complexity of gameplay, that's literally the draw of modern diablo games. If you want autism you should play POE, Grim Dawn, D2, or Last Epoch (in a descending order, POE being the most complex, Last Epoch probably being the least complex)

There's really not much demand for fine motor control in ARPGs since most of your attacks are heavily AOE, so the game does a ton on auto targeting for you. D4 doesn't have much loot too so you're not really wrestling with the controls that much in that regard. I could imagine parsing loot in something like POE would be insane though.

Side note, games like halls of torment are great for controller and that quick diablo fix, I play them all the time on planes. I still need to get D2R on a sale so that I can play while flying too.

most of the time when arpgs are discussed, you have d2, d3, even d1 despite it being a dungeon crawler, grim dawn, titan quest, torchlight, poe1/2, last epoch and many others

Look, the "restart a character every season" thing just doesn't fucking work. I a 33 year old wagie, I don't want to make a new character every 3 months. I only played the first 2 seasons before dropping it. Its just not a fun game.

There's nothing to do with your character after you max it. It's not a MMO where the level cap gets raised and there's a whole new continent for high end players. The point of D4 is building the character.
