Not buying it. It takes hours upon hours to get into any state in-game where you can really engage with DLC, and that's if you don't get fucked over in the meantime. Ultimately, it's just not worth the time investment.

You should be able to start with a ship that's mostly built already so you can actually engage with the content as it was intended instead of making it impossible to even interact with the DLC until you are basically 80% done with the game and already have end-game equipment for all your colonists.
Anomaly should have been an optional end-game level/experience that you could opt into when you're nearly done with your warpdrive so you have the proper tech and equipment to deal with the 70+ hordes of zombies that have higher resistance than Marine armor and don't feel pain.

This whole DLC though is kind of fucked in how much content that should be in the base game it gate keeps. The fact that you have to buy this DLC to get more animals and equipment as well as a mere option to subjugate pawns is crazy. Literally 25 dollars for half of a proper DLC and half content and QOL that should have been in the base game years ago.

Truth is Vanilla Expanded team mogged Tynans people early and hard. Yes they bloated and made some mistakes but the first few years the game was carried by their mods.

I’m really mostly excited to build a coastal fishing colony. Might even prop up a RimZoo for some extra bucks. Honestly space travel is the least exciting part for me, I love all the updates flora and fauna got.

What's the bare minimum for a crashlanded start that won't take me two hours of rerolling in terms of colonists? A doctor/researcher and a combo of plant/shooter/construct?

Preferable:

Cook if you don't have paste dispenser or don't want to use it.
At least one good combat pawn.
Nearly anyone can grow plants so it's not as important, but it speeds up chopping trees and you need a lot of wood early on. Otherwise you want someone who is good at mining for biome with no trees.
It's good to find a pawn with fast learning so they can multi-task early game.
Passion/high construction will save you a lot of resources and time.
Install RandomPlus you get to set minimum skill levels or perks, so finding pawns isn't complete chore.
Sometimes it takes millions of rerolls.

I find that having plant+construction on one guy is essential early on. Otherwise your builder will endlessly struggle with every tree and bush under the blueprints. And designating plants to cut, then waiting for it to finish before laying down blueprints isn't very convenient.

If you have a colonist who doesn't at least have 5 in planting you're going to be spending days doing nothing but planting just to keep your food up so your colonists don't starve.

Also I feel like people really underestimate how important it is to have at least one colonist who is good at social. If you have a bunch of colonists who are basically autists when it comes to speech then your colony is going to have routine mental breaks regardless of how good you make their food and living quarters.

I don't get what you are hinting at here.
You don't need that much social if you just want to enslave some pawn quickly, I know slaves can't do everything and they are slower at their jobs but they aren't as likely to get unhappy.
High social skill is nice for all the ideology stuff, but you can manage without that if you just have drugs.
Ideology is the biggest source of free mood bonuses in general.
I find plants skill more important for cutting down trees than for growing crops early on. You don't want your builder to waste whole day on a single tree after all.
If you are feeling brave you can just tackle ancient danger early on, but this is often just quick way to end.
