[Sad News] Game Devs are burning out and taking 8+ months off
>"There's like—I would hesitate to count—but a large number compared to other projects I've been on who have taken mental exhaustion leave here. Some as short as two weeks to a month, some as long as eight months and nine," one staffer told me after saying they had taken some time themselves.

Maybe developing a video game takes 10 years because half your staff is gone for 8 months a year?

EA's problem isn't that they crunch people to death at all. They're actually fairly OK on "overwork" related things.

The problem is that there is some amount of overtime, and the corporate environment ices people out. You have to be Media Trained to work there, and you have to have a ton of meetings, and most employees wear suits, even developers, so it creates a self-esteem-unfriendly atmosphere compared to how game dev used to be. Everything is extremely hierarchal too, so it just creates a completely demotivating and coldly corporate atmosphere, so when something real is expected of workers there, they feel an undue amount of pressure and emotional stress, and that's when they decide the only way out is to take a stress-leave.

It's just a culture problem. EA is not an inspiring company to work for.

AAA teams need to be reduced back down to AA teams with shorter smaller games, and significantly less budget, with no corporate managing. AAA doesn't work nor has it ever worked.

Honestly, this is what happens when your studio culture turns into a soulless bureaucracy. You hire 400 people, but 300 of them are producing meetings, not games. Then the 100 devs actually doing work get saddled with the pressure of delivering a billion-dollar franchise while navigating HR, DEI seminars, corporate memos about your email tone, and a thousand Jira tickets a day. Of course they’re burning out.

It’s not even the crunch anymore-it’s the death by a thousand corporate policy cuts.

Society is overworked.
Our caveman brains are used to hunting maybe 2-3 hours a day, 2-3 times per week (depending on how big the tribe is and how good the game is in the area). We're not suppose to be worked to the bone 99% of our lives.

This. Even medieval peasants spent a few months working their fields and the rest of the year building barns, light game hunting, praying and helping around the village. It's only in around the 19th century and beyond where humanity somehow managed to enslave itself again.

I wouldn't say overworked as much as overstressed. When you're a sheepherder and you spend most of the day on your ass looking at nature as your flock of a dozen sheep graze around you doing it for 8 hours a day isn't a problem. It's when you have 3 meetings, 1 with HR for not calling Danny for Daniella now, 8 projects and tickets flowing in while your boss is breathing down your neck about documentation you haven't had time to start, your mortgage and your autistic child your wife had at 40. That's when you start to fade as a person.

It was the industrial revoloution. It made it so that you were competing with machines, and so had to work more to compete and everything was about working as much as possible to produce as much as possible.

People use to have seasonal jobs, if you look back on records of any place in history. Because you cant till fields every day, you would go and do another trade for a bit, then spend MONTHS doing nothing, only to go straight back into work and do it all again, and people were able to live like this for much longer than what we are experiencing today. However, with the way people treat food and consider everything replacable I dont think this can even work with humans any more. Use to be you got a metal bucket and it was in the family for several generations, where something that simply would have the effort put into fixing and maintaining it, now you just throw it out if its taking up space. Big Ted was right, humans were not made for this.

Then your boss takes a fat paycheck 10x what you make.

That's what it's like having a stable job making games for a big company.
Imagine you went to college for 'game development', which thousands of people have done, and these are the only jobs you can get.
Big companies love saving money by hiring junior devs with little experience.

It's incredibly demoralizing and shitty having to show up to your job every day, knowing you are making shitty games and nothing you do can fix it. The higher ups ruin every single project you work on.

Perfectly justified to take a giant leave for emotional damage. It straight up makes normal people depressed. I didn't even mention "crunch" and you can already see how shit it is to work these jobs.

Oh and then faggots yell at you on Twitter. Why the fuck would any dev have a social media account? Gamers are retarded manchilden that make death threats over video games. Get the fuck off social media wtf???
