Women who like games have always liked JRPGs because they’re story focused, and usually about character melodrama and emotional stories.

Combine that with the fact that they tend to be quite easy, and you’ve got a genre that’s a sure-fire hit with girls.

At those times, they just followed what was trend for the mainstream audience and what got them attention, and videogames were not particularly massive outside the same group that has been gaming for decades. Everything changed after social media and twitch. Twitch became big and slowly but surely this "grl gamers" found a cheaper and easier way to slowly but surely prostitute themselves. Notice how before twitch... where were the female youtube channels? Beyond the usual gaming sites channels you have dozens of avgn imitators, you have teenagers filming with awful cameras their gameplays, you have dudes uploading videos of themselves playing when they were 10, dudes making reviews, uploading trailers, trying to do documentaries and... at best two gaming girl channels? three maybe?
