Strive did well because they had the common sense/smarts to delay it, it looks good, they showed music in trailers that attracted people even if you in particular don't like it, it took Xrd's rc system and changed it into something that's actually worth a damn, they had the smarts to make the skill floor akin to Tekken so people were willing try it and have fun picking up and messing around with characters to see who fits them faster, and they kept just enough anime bullshit to not end up like that piece of shit dnf duel.

Testament should have been done better but he was a victim of arcsys’ marketing campaign at the time, and his design did work as a zoner even if it’s super lame compared to Testament. Zappa is a mostly normal guy who has ghosts following him, making him into a generic zoner would be weirder because it’d be hard to make anything normal work with Zappa as a character. I think he’d lose the low profile dash and his backdash for sure but could have his summons still. Sword max range might be shorter and dog might lose the ability to do followup moves. Triplets could stay the same. Raou would probably lose his high chip damage.

Testament still is a gear who uses magic so it’s easy to put him in as a basic zoner. They might not keep everything but it’d be fundamentally difficult for them to not make Zappa one of the more interesting characters just by his story because he can’t fight in a normal way. We can only speculate until he’s eventually added to a new game, but Daisuke did confirm he can still fight with his ghosts. Zappa is really cool to me so I’d at least like to see what they would try.

8 out of every 10 wake ups you probably want to be neutral teching at different timings. The other 2 out of 10 times are when you know your opponent is going for an option that won't catch rolls. If you think they're reacting to the white flash, quick tech is also useful to catch them off guard but that's something you should only use once in a while. Also if they show that they don't know how to roll catch, abuse that and always roll.

Neutral tech is the most obvious safe option. Fully invuln f1 and through the entire duration.
If you're teching in the air, make an effort to tech away from the corner.
Rolls are more specialised, but they can be applied on reaction to specific setups to beat stuff like delayed airdash overhead/low
You can also try rolling away midscreen if the character can't chase it very well, but you need to know when this applies.
Quick tech is VERY specialised. You basically do it whenever you think that they're waiting for your neutral tech and will manually time their meaty.
It doesn't have a white flash and is cancellable f14 or so which lets you steal a turn or even better get a hit.
Delaytech is the strongest one that people tend to default to. Basically you just delay your neutral tech a little. If they try to check rolls it's likely to bluebeat and maybe even let you instant-tech out. Also it usually beats autotimed stuff like safejumps, very meaty attacks etc. They can still time their meaty to the flash, but that exposes them to quick tech.

You want to rotate among these and your char specific escape options. But the default should be neutral tech block and expand from there.

You have a clear goal to try in a match, mind shouldn't be empty anymore.
Your understanding of X is rigid, try it in more situations and see how things play out. Maybe it's stronger and more applicable than you think.
