3's biggest criticism compared to 1 & 2 was that it was too action-oriented with long sequences that didn't allow much exploration (if any) with few powerups to collect

One of my concerns is that the psychic powers are going to prevent the existence of new power ups. One of the main reasons I like metroidvanias is collecting shiny new toys to play with. Now, I'm sure that a good number of new abilities are going to be contextualized as psi powers, but if so they need to be properly out there. The phazon powers were honestly not that great. Let's get crazy this time, yeah? Give us Phase Drift. You already have the slow down for guided shots. Come on.

The legacy versions of Space Jump and Screw attack gave you infinite flight and power. Instakill any enemy, invincibility, unlimited jumps, no ifs or buts. Fusion and Super were the last games to have these. Every game since has watered them down in some way for some reason or another. Space Jump only gets one extra jump of height, only jumps 5 times, or can't gain height at all. Screw Attack doesn't make you invincible, doesn't oneshot certain enemies, doesn't protect you from projectiles, etc. They're an important part of the series' legacy, and represent "confident" game design where you can make a game that doesn't break if you put something too strong in it. It's cowardly to nerf them. "Oh no they'd be WAY too strong, you can't put something like THAT in a game like this!" Bah.
