were VNs literally ever truly popular?
I don't know any normal people who grew up with VNs
If anything, pseudo-VNs like Persona are more popular than ever
nerdy emo zoomer girls in their early 20s fucking love Persona because of 5
We've slowly wrapped back around to enjoying text dense content (Baldur's Gate 3, Disco Elysium) and if anything it was millennials who got sick of this stuff
Pure visual novels to my knowledge have literally always been more obscure and I hear them talked about now more than ever before in my life

I think I get where you're coming from
in western weeb culture they were "more popular" but I think its different from how it seems
I think anime in the west is genuinely mainstream now in a way it never was before, and so it feels like certain things are less popular than before but you have to measure the amount of new people as well, and with anime in particular its MOSTLY new people now, who yea have no interest in these things. So is the number of people in VNs less now? I have no idea, but there's like 1000x more people into japanese media in general now so its kinda hard to see one way or the other. That being said, I assume VNs did get genuinely less popular in Japan because we just don't see big great ones anymore really. At the same time, video games with VN influence are more popular than ever (nu-Fire Emblem, Persona, Stardew/Rune Factory). I don't know anon, this is kinda a big post of nothing but I just think its muddy and I also find that its seemingly more common among zoomers to get into really niche weird shit and a lot of those guys like VNs but these are outcasts still at the end of the day.

I find its a nice in between of a book and an anime
it has some animation, music, sound fx, sometimes even voice acting, but its far more like a book where you go at your own pace
I like them, as I like anime and manga and books, its just a different thing and feels like a different experience
In no way do VNs try to be games though but they are interactive media

Cool
What does that tell me about the quality of the genre?
Are you implying only video games are good? Do you only care about video games?
Or are you just stating random facts?
VNs have to fit somewhere and since they are interactive media, they do attach themselves to video games more than any other medium because they function like games on a technical level and are made in the exact same way games are made and run on the exact same hardware that games run and are in stores that mostly only sell video games so naturally VNs are discussed on video game message boards
I hope that's not your only input because that would be painfully boring

its organization 'tism
people are just mad they're categorized as video games
they never actually discuss if VNs are enjoyable or not
they simply do not want them to be called video games (for reasons I cannot possibly understand)
VN haters typically have no criticism outside of this statement unless they dislike japanese media in general, either way their opinions on these things tend to be kinda worthless
there's this very bizarre kinda bitterness towards something that isn't a video game and yet most of these people probably watch movies, listen to music, and if they weren't illiterate they'd probably read books
its truly just autism because they're assmad interactive media that isn't quite a video game is often mistaken for a video game
