My only complaint is that crafting crops into foods for sale doesn't really give much of a profit from the crafting time/work put into it. But on the other hand, that makes money not too much of a grind either.

It's fine, but nowhere near as good as SDV.
You eventually unlock different farms in different towns, with their own different currencies. Which in itself isn't so bad but when combined with the lack of any kind of automatic watering means you essentially end up abandoning everything to go do things in the new area.
Not necessarily bad a thing but it's not how I want to play this kind of game.
In SDV it feels like pretty much everything you do in game all leads back to improving your farm. SH plays like you farm so you can do other things outside of your farm.
