Would you play a fantasy game in a setting inspired by someone other than Tolkien? I made a video talking about the concept that mostly looked at his contemporaries (https://youtu.be/X2wwTCOfrz0?si=QwAbFlOnFewpiaTN). Would you play an Elder Scrolls' game based off of Dunsany's works? Or a Fallout game based off of Hodgson's work? Or an RPG based off of Smith's works interesting?

I'll watch that video or something in a minute, but I love that goblin design.

That said, is Metaphor considered 'non-Tolkien'? I know /v/ isn't super fond of it, but I've been having a good time with it.

Dnd had inspiration from multiple authors, so an average setting based on it is already not "pure Tolkien". It's kinda Tolkien.

And please do! I don't know if it's non-Tolkien, but if nothing else it's been fresher than a lot of fantasy I've played of late. Maybe because of the subject matter, maybe because the music is fucking banging as always.

What I regret the most of Riot delaying their MMO is the potential boatloads of Yordle OCs lost with each moment the game spends out of our hands.

Yes, I would. Conan is a perfectly fine inspiration, but my OC settings for the tabletop game (I'll totally manage to get a party for more than session 0 one day) is inspired by Lewis, Lovecraft, and Seuss.

It's pretty simple Lovecraft suggests that madness is entirely bad, Seuss shows lots of good insanity. (seriously look at his landscapes), Seuss has talking animals as does Lewis.
So its Seusses impossible world design, with Lovecrafts things beyond that want to eat the world, held off by Lewis's Christian outlook of the good inherent in all of us children of God.

...but then they just sorta...stopped putting out lore. They're doing new stuff with the Noxus show and the Seasons, but it all feels bad when it's wrapped in a gacha-filled, exploitative mess of a game.

Obviously? Tons are. I love Tolkien, but the idea that whatever he did should be ubiquitous in fantasy is retarded. Middle-Earth isn't actually that interesting of a world, it's perfectly designed for a down-to-earth story to be told in where a handful of dudes walk across fields and through woods. That's not very exciting for a game.

Not to disagree with you at all, but that was a state for a lot of fantasy games in the early 2000s.

>evil Orc-like horde threatens the world just because they are bad
>you and a group of loyal companions must band together to stop them
>each race lives in its own little space in the world, there are elves in woods and dwarves in mountains
>and you need their help to succeed in your quest

Yeah, there's also Oblivion, but Oblivion just apes the Weta aesthetic. It doesn't replicate Tolkien's core ideas or worldbuilding philosophy. Everything which gets called Tolkienesque is actually always Greenwoodesque.

Cool video. I just watched a really bad video essay about WoW and it was just 6 minutes of self-centred nostalgia wankery where he occasionally highlight random sentences of his as if he was quoting fucking milton while talking about classic wow being โ€œmomโ€™s spaghettiโ€. And I thought to myself that video game video essays donโ€™t get more unbearably pretentious than this. I donโ€™t get this mindset at all. What about the setting is unrelatable more so than any fantasy setting? I understand that Morrowind is more foreign, presenting a very different world and culture but thatโ€™s only one aspect and the character is also a new arrival (like the player)

>Goblin race is all male and they reproduce by raping female of other races.
This is the most dumb concept for someone who knows basics of biology and especially reproductive instincts. These type of goblins would be exterminated into extinction almost instantly because men get fucking mad if something will be a threat for women they want have sex with.
The way more sense would be if goblins will be female, looked cute and they reproduce by being impregnated by males of other races. Young adult human male has almost limitless sex drive and libido and average human settlement will be able to sexually satisfy all human women inside and still there will be a lot of horny human males who will travel to nearest goblin den just to creampie some green shortstack goodness it has inside. Some of horniest humans will choose to live in goblin den just to smash goblin pussy all day and then sleep while cuddling with them at night.

May goblin girls throw themselves at your feet Anon, thank you for your pateonage! Oh hey! I had the exact idea of turning this into a video as well! I loved the depiction of the Erlkonig when I first heard it and thought the imagery of a fae obsessed with claiming the life of a boy and the frantic pace of the music symbolizing the father's desperation to rush him to safety lended itself well in portraying it as a drawn out journey you undertake in a video game! I feel like we're operating on the same wavelength here.

Shortstacks exist irl. I've seen them. They're not as short and exaggerated as hentai makes them out to be but they do exist. You just gotta meet a really really short girl with a bit of weight and big boob and ass genetics. It's hard to get the perfect ratio but they do exist irl. Tall woman have more body overall to store fat in, hence why tall people are often skinny. Short girls aren't able to hide that same about of fat on them so it goes to all their sexy bits.

Final Fantasy
Xenoblade Chronicles
Pokemon

There are tons of fantasy games like that. As long as there aren't Elves, Dwarves or Orcs or other greenskins, then you are basically not Tolkien inspired.

Although everything will be Tolkien inspired to some degree as he basically also created a lot of the "rules" for how to do world-building.

Tolkien/D&Disms aren't inherently bad, and they do not make a setting boring. Similarly, just because a setting is some person's extremely high-concept world of tryhard "bet you haven't seen THIS before!" autofellatio does not make a setting interesting. You can make a world utterly devoid of fantastical elements still feel as magical as the most high fantasy work you've seen, and you can make an extremely nonsensical high fantasy world feel more grounded than the reality you live in. It all comes down to individual works and how the writer applies attributes of the setting.
