Started my reread of homestuck last year after dropping it back in 2012 or 13 at the trickster bullshit. Over one year after getting to Cascade I am struggling to make it through act 6. I only have about 500 pages to go but its just so unintersting.

I genuinely believe that Homestuck would have been stronger if it centered around the villains. Maybe Hussie felt confined to making a heroically themed story because it was meant for as wide of an internet audience as possible, maybe he just didn't consider it, but I wouldn't have been opposed to something like Caliborn being the main character. Uh, outside of Homosuck, that is.

I think I can agree with that, at least for act 6. For as long as we spend with the Alphas, I at no point have felt like I know them as well as the Betas, so not much wouldve been lost had act 6 focused more on Caliborn instead.

The whole reason I decided to reread it is that I thought maybe adult me would be able to appreciate act 6 more than the teenage me who dropped in.
But no, the same thing that happened 13 years ago happened again this time; as soon as act 6 started my enjoyment plummeted and never recovered.
I dont know if Ive ever seen anything else like it. A work that goes from a 10 to a 3 in the span of a single page, instead of a steady decline.
At least adult me enjoyed acts 1 to 5 way more than I ever did as a teen I guess.

Some of the dialogue during the final boss fight is, in fact, as cringeworthy as everyone says, and some of the prose in the narration gets a little purple, but honestly outside of that the writing is mostly decent. You can see a lot of the ideas about game design that Toby would carry forward into UT/DR.

Honestly, mostly. DR definitely inherited the "only one ending; you either get what you get or you don't play at all" aspect from it (assuming Toby's not lying, anyways), and the plot revolves significantly around a broken family. Plus a significant portion of the game takes place in an imaginary world based around a character's headspace.
The specifics are all different though.

Homestuck is a terrible, terrible comic to read through, absolute bottom-of-the-barrel liquid shit. Hussie obviously had no fucking idea what to write, no through-line or plan, and the story reads like it. The pesterlogs are fun until you realize that they barely ever advance the plot, and there are only so many ways you can spin teenagers fucking about on IRC before it gets stale. Interesting plot threads are introduced and then abandoned (Davesprite,) the story gets incredibly convoluted to no real benefit, the meager plot elements that are introduced will be regurgitated to you repeatedly, Sburb as a game is never taken seriously by either the author or the players and the entire thing is just deeply stupid. Jade's entire purpose as a character is to go "cool stuff is going to happen, tee hee! can't tell you about it though :(... but it's gonna happen :)" The only satisfying payoff is when John gets to recreate the ending of Con Air, which should tell you exactly how fucking bad the whole thing is.

The classic response is that "it was great until act 6," but Hussie stops bothering to pretend he likes either his fanbase or the story he's writing pretty early into A5, and the plot shifts from meandering to actively spiteful when A5A2 rolls around. John doesn't reunite with his dad because you wanted them to; characters die in extremely stupid ways to make their fans feel stupid. The shittiest characters are given far more plot relevance than anyone asked for, and when a fight isn't off-screened it plays out like a fucking child bashing their action figures together.

The one defense I ever see anyone pull out for this miserable shit is that it's a "comedy," as if this excuses the fact that it was written specifically to shit on anyone that was invested in it. The only joke Hussie's got is at your expense, and it's called Homestuck. Go read any other webcomic, you'll get more mileage out of it.

It definitely becomes less consistent. Act 4 is probably the most consistently good part (excluding the act 3-4 intermission which mogs the entire thing and stands up to problem sleuth), but act 5 also has its peaks. Cascade is top three best [S] easily, and the best place to stop reading.
