It's not the N64 games that have aged, just the controls. Emulation doesn't get them right and they are always awful compared to their successor with a dedicated stick for the camera.

I'm not gonna say it's bad or even that it aged poorly because I didn't even finish the game, but I just don't get it. I played it and went "this is it?" It seems really barebones to me and a lot of it boiled down to just pressing the same buttons over and over again. There are plenty of good games on the Genesis and I don't understand how this somehow achieved the status of being one of the greatest games of all time.

honestly i almost reeled at re before 4, because i think 4 is overrated anyway, but honestly i thought about it for a bit more and i honestly agree. I still think RE1 and 2 are solid games with way more potential than they actually display. But all of these games drop off like mfers in the 2nd half when you escape the mansion or station, and while better at this than their remakes, theyre still fundamentally trial and error games.

You can pick almost any SNES game.

the effortlessness already present in 90s pc fps does kind of hurt earlier console fps pretty bad. with the expense and obscurity considerations that existed at the time no longer being relevant it's hard to justify how comparatively labored and finicky those 5th gen fps were.
