Even for games that aren't doing something similair, or even in the same genre, plenty of devs have said they were at least partially inspired or enjoyed DE and it's still held up as the gold standard for good writing in videogames.

it isn't, but if you mean why aren't more people trying to do something similair, there's good reason. The setting and characters are a huge part of the appeal but you can't just rip those off and expect to succeed. The thing that really carried it was the writing, and the main writer for the game was a published and succesful author. Very, very few people are talented enough writers to write an entire novel that becomes succesful, and only a fraction of a percent of those that do will get a videogame made after their work, much less be directly involved in the writing of the videogame. Most people writing for games just aren't on that level. Even in terms of raw talent, it still takes lots of time and investment to write that much, and in ZA/UM's case, they had to cut a bad deal with a shitty business man to ensure they could get the funding to even make the thing, and it ultimately flopped when they lost the rights. DE is a miracle of the universe and we will not see another one anytime soon.

I think you mean last century. The industrialization of USSR was done in a horrendous manner that left many people destitute or just dead. But the USSR didn't care about the loss of life, because it was an authoritarian nation. And China under communism oversaw massive humanitarian catastrophes, that left millions of their citizens dead. It only started to rapidly develop economically after they decided to privatize half of their economy, because they realized the planned economy model doesn't work. And those two weren't the most rapidly economically developing countries of the past century. That would be capitalist Japan post WW2.

People were forced to love Stalin because he enforced a cult of personality around himself, and killed everybody around him. Once he died, it was immediately acknowledged by the new rulers that he was a bad thing for the country and USSR started going through a period of de-Stalinization.

It's one thing to be a fucking commie, but to defend the failed communist projects that fell into brutal authoritarian rule that had fuck all to do with communism is something else.

If you're referring to things like colonialism, then those were carried out predominantly under feudal empires, not under liberal free-market democracies. The latter is a relatively modern concept. And what does exploitation even mean in the modern context? Trading with a country that perpetuates human rights abuses in the production of the goods it sells? Sure, you can make that critique, but it wasn't really any different in "communist" countries. Hell, some of the biggest-scale systemic human rights violations in the modern world are perpetuated in China. Plus it's not something inherent in capitalism. You could easily draft legislation that would prohibit trade on such terms, it's just that people don't really care that much. And it's not like you can control the way another nation organizes their country in a way that would be ethical from the contemporary perspective. You can at most decide to not trade with them, but such trade in many cases is a lifeline for the people in those countries, where their governments are too weak to effectively govern. So it's definitely something you would have to consider.
