It ran its natural course of 4 or 5 good games for the material they had. The entire universe has a handful of likeable characters and the story is not very interesting for the dozen of sequels they wanna milk out of it. The only smart way to advance the series would've been doing a final chapter for Master Chief after Reach and risk it all creating a new setting in a sequel in the future with new storylines and characters but the switch to 343 condemned the series to being on the safest route always and bolder franchises like Titanfall managed to do what Halo was too conservative to do.
