Idk why people feel the need to shit on OoT or claim it's the peak of gaming. It's certainly one of the best examples ever of an evolutionary leap in gaming, but it's very dated. Similar to SM64, it's got flaws but A/B'ing them to what came before and after in their series is legit mind-blowing.
I replayed the PC port last year, and it held up, but I also have a lot of nostalgia for it and MM.

I think its one of those things that have to be experienced in their era is the thing.

The overrated part I think comes from the fact that, forever typical of nintenfags, it was their first time experiencing something like it. Its not that it's groundbreaking in any way. It's 3D world isn't the most immersive or alive at all, but it was for children with an N64.

I still think it's a great game though. It has an atmosphere that's all it's own and above everything it actually feels like an adventure, not a game. Its cryptic enough to make you think and it's controls are dated pretty bad yet they're perfect for exploring it's dungeons. It all works together really well to feeling like a hero going on a life changing journey and the game asks for just enough of a challenge to give you that feeling like it had been a meaningful journey by its end. When I beat Dark Souls 1 for the first time, I had a similar feeling. I didn't feel like I just beat some game and saw the ending, I felt like I'd been on a journey, like I'd just returned home and wanted to tell others about it.

You can play it now but I think it's hard to get those feelings unless you're extremely patient with old games and are willing to let yourself be lost

The Saturn library is far superior to that of the N64, but much of it never left Japan, so you won't see a culture heavily influenced by Americans valuing it. That will only happen in the long run.
In 50 years, no one will still believe that the N64 was superior to the Saturn, because all those autists who grew up playing those pieces of shit N64 games will be dead, and the only way to form an opinion on the matter will be by making a factual comparison of the games.

The games were very expensive literally like $120 in todays money so most of the time people have fond memories of renting games that were usually really bad. You can't really argue that games like Star Fox 64, Paper Mario and Banjo Kazooie were even really bad games though. They both had very good suites of games.
Also Gamecube was a failure moving forward which is more speaking toward the PS2 era than the N64, N64 just had the quality consensus while PS1 had a LOT of slop so you always knew you were renting something that was at least playable.

But yeah, if you notice when you run to the right or left your camera will not move, it just rotates. The character is running in a circle around the camera instead of at a pure 90.
That is just one example of how the camera was designed very meticulously to follow you in an intuitive way so you didn't need to constantly adjust the camera. And the majority of modern 3rd person action games still use this system as their base because its very intuitive.

this was my experience with oot too, I bought a discounted N64 with it late and really just wasn't feeling it but forced myself to play through it because of game journalists pushing it so hard. I finished it but it was basically just a bowl of plain oatmeal to me, I barely formed any memories of it and everything after the tree guy is very hazy. Except fishing, I remember the fishing. You'll have a hell of a time trying to find a functioning PS1, or even a fucking functioning PS2. Nintendo consoles just hold up better, and people who owned them didn't tend to play them into the ground. If you find a PS1 - PS3-backwards-compatible that work they'll probably have had their lasers replaced among other parts (memory card slots on the PS1 usually, and fans on later models), and the PS3 might have been blow dried, microwaved, or put in an oven to try to jump start it again. Once you go replacing parts, or microwaving your PS3, they won't hold up the same way the original unreplaced parts would have, so you'll probably need to do that every 4 - 6 years if you actually use the consoles. Just using the things regularly could also just undo the 'repairs,' because they won't hold up to stress. The PS3 specifically is a bitch to fix. Once you open it up to repair anything you're at risk of it just not working anymore. The PS1 and PS2 aren't as bad, but will need regular maintenance if you use them. Gamecubes and n64 are still going with minimal issue (SA2, people without memory cards, humidity, water damage, and extreme heat kill gamecubes) and there's more wiis then anybody wants. I say this when I really fucking love PS1 games, but I emulate them as I don't have a choice. My n64, gamecube, snes, and various handhelds are all still alive.

This is why Area 51, Black, Resistance and 1000 otherwise shitty shovelware fps' were 'better than Halo' for so many years, because no one who said they were had actually played Halo. They were never good, just the best Playstation had access to. I owned all three consoles. I MADE snoys play Halo. They were happy to fucking hate it until they actually played it. Then they all bought Xboxes.

Playstation's library was as wide as an ocean and as deep as a puddle. It had great games, Ratchet and Clank was my favorite fucking thing on Playstation, but there was a lot of meh right beside the good that it was often hard to find what was good. The fact a shitty shovelware fps like fucking Black was ever placed alongside the original God of War trilogy shows you how badly Playstation was graded on a curb, not just in the PS1 era, but in general.

That's interesting. I, and most people, though Metal Gear Solid was better than both, but 1998 was a stacked year and OoT is still awesome. None of them are really comparable though. I played them depending on what flavor of adventure I wanted to go on.

As a kid my friends were all talking about Ocarina of time and when I asked someone my parents to get it they told me to wait for my birthday and got me pic related. MM was great though but I never ended up playing Ocarina of Time I wonder what it might have been like to play it at that age.
