I heard a rumor that sakurai negotiated an agreement that he'd come back to direct smash 6 if he was allowed to do a sequel to kirby air ride first

smash is also one of the best selling games on switch so I'd be a little surprised if they aren't going to try make a new one with or without sakurai

I don't know where Smash goes from here. If they start development from scratch, it will have a quarter of the content present in Ultimate. If they just build on Ultimate, it will look like a Wii U game forever.

Officially no but from a business standpoint, smash makes too much money to not make another game.

New golden sun game will be revealed soon and isaac will become actually playable instead of an assist trophy

I'm predicting an Ultimate upgrade maybe with some new characters and maybe a new mode. Definitely hundreds of new spirits because that's what I expect of Nintendo these days. Smash has kind of reached its conclusion.

Nintendo owns enough successful franchises that they don’t necessarily have to make another Smash game. That said, Ultimate will likely get an upgrade pack eventually.

The next one will just be an iteration on Ultimate which itself was an iteration on Smash 4. The roster has gotten so bloated they could never do something on even half the scale if it were a full engine refresh like 64 x Melee / Melee x Brawl.

Reboot with new movesets obviously. Having to make less characters also means we can probably get a real single player mode again.

If Sakurai is not going to innovate on the formula, he should step down and let someone new direct. The past 3 games (4 if you count 3DS and WiiU as different) have all been variations on the Brawl design philosophy and gameplay. Ultimate is as good as that can get.

The fact that Ultimate made a fuckton of money. The internet basically shat its pants every time a character got revealed, there's no way Nintendo is gonna just stop making them, with or without Sakurai.

Too much money to not get one.

The problem is what they will do with it. I feel like Nintendo is gonna push for some kind of ultimate deluxe edition which would be kinda lame.
I hope they propose something pretty different

I wonder what they'll do with the roster, though. Of course they'll have to downsize it, the third party situation alone will force them to. But the average normie probably won't understand and I can see some big backlash when it's announced there will be way less fighters, despite Sakurai blatantly saying the "EVERYONE IS HERE!" thing was a one-time deal.

For one, bring back ground momentum transferring into jumps, which 64 and Melee had and Brawl got rid of. That's been a staple of good platformers since Super Mario Bros, and it was the biggest downgrade from Melee to Brawl for me. That one small change would make Ultimate play differently. Maybe it's too hard to balance around with such a large cast, I don't know, but fun should take priority over balance.

I remember back in the day when people were really upset when say: Mewtwo wasn't in Brawl or Snake wasn't in Smash 4. I'm not exactly thrilled to hear that but way more annoying and with 10x more characters.

I just hope the cut-down roster means more of a focus on things not roster related. Like yeah the roster in Ultimate is impressive, but there's not much to do with all these characters.

Why wouldn't there be? They know Zelda and Smash are the heavy hitters now that World is out. Yes, they're going to have a smaller roster. A smaller roster means they can fine tune things better and they don't have to hoard all of the stuff from the last game, licenses, copyrights and rights included from outside parties.

Now DLC is definitely going to be a thing, and that's where you better get your wallet ready, assuming they offer characters people actually want instead of shill picks for their upcoming games.

Capcom proved you could release a fighting game with 6 characters on launch and STILL have people pay $70 for it day 1, nu-smash will be low effort slop to drag out another 5 year battle pass slop, almost certain it will be the worst entry in the series whenever it comes out

With a cut-down roster I think it'd be perfect to have another go at a Subspace-esc story mode. Now Sakurai is kinda iffy about full animated cutscenes for some reason, so my proposition is to make a story mode with a style similar to Project X Zone, with the characters actually interacting with each other with dialogue boxes and talk sprites. A fighting game crossover can be so much more than just the characters beating each other up, and I think it'd be a great place to also allow the characters's personalities to shine.
