Here's one example: I knew you had to hide inside one of the giant jellyfish heads in order to get into the core of Giant's Deep. But if you touch the tentacles, you die. I tried ramming my ship into the head in the hopes of breaking it open or something, but nothing worked. The game does not properly explain that you have to go underneath it, touch the supposedly deadly tentacles, then swim upwards.
Not all of the puzzles were like that, but a few of them.

The only bullshit puzzle is the Ash Twin warp and that’s only because it spoils the entire game if you discover it too early. The way it’s set up most players are likely to try it once and move on, leaving it as the last piece of the puzzle to come back to after exploring everything else.

I never realized this squares with the black and white holes in the middle were teleporters. I knew about the White Hole Station and the High Energy Lab, but I never connected those things with teleportation. The only thing that made me think "teleportation" was the spinning dial in White Hole Station, and I believe there's only one other dial like that (in the Black Hole Forge).

Do you like the sequel Riven? OW is more similar to Riven than Myst in that the puzzles are very integrated into the context of the game world, rather than seeming arbitrarily placed. I just used Myst in my initial example as it's more well-known.

If not, then give it a few more hours of gameplay; if it still doesn't gel with you, then it may just not be your kind of game, and there's nothing wrong with that.

I needed to look up how to do this specific part, as well. Found the Jellyfish in the bramble. Learned they could go through the core, but could not figure out how to use that info.

But really what stopped me was my intense fear of that planet with the storms and the core. Fuck, that was actually the scariest game I ever played, with my specific phobias. Kind of cool in that way, though. No other game has ever triggered my scale phobia or thallasophobia more than Outer Wilds. Sometimes I would realize I was coming into a planet too quickly (specifically the ocean planet) and would have to just shut my eyes or alt f4.

Remember that the buttons always activate the same thrusters, regardless of which direction you're facing. So if the ship is flat on the ground and you use the "upward" thruster, you'll move upward. But if the ship rotated downwards and you use the "upward" thruster, you'll accelerate towards the ground instead of going up.

It's essentially a looping space detective game. All progress is built on knowledge. It'll take you 12-20 hours to finish the game, but you'll finish the final run in 10-15 minutes. It's why going in blind is so important. If you have any of the game spoiled for you, it will severely hamper your experience.

Philosophically, the game is about endings and beginnings. It's about letting go to embrace something new. It's about how trying to chase the feeling of "first times" is a fruitless endeavor. It's about real growth. Do everything you can to truly engross yourself and get sucked in. The ending ties everything together, & if you aren't invested, it won't really hit you the way it did to so many. It's legitimately one of the best experiences ever put into vidya, and I'm comfortable saying it IS the best depending on the day.

A couple of puzzles being slightly obtuse in execution because they involve awkward controls and not enough leeway doesn't change the fact that all of the puzzles are braindead shit that don't require you to do any external thinking.

I tried out Lorelei the other day, I'm at 80% done and I don't know if I can't be bothered going back to it. It was still better than Outer Wilds because the math puzzles at least required me to think for a second, instead of being purely exploration based "find breadcrumb, go where breadcrumb tells you" shit.

If you like puzzles, recently I enjoyed Type Help, and further back I really enjoyed Void Stranger, which is a deceptively simple game that requires you to take notes and have a brain, and consistently rewards you for it.

I understood the puzzle, I deduced the solution with finding the jellyfish hidden away in Dark Bramble, but my friends kept insisting we go about it in the worst ways possible and then refused to go back because the cycle ended as they were ramming the ship into the jellyfish. I kept trying to tell them that I wanted to swim up inside the jellyfish and they just wouldn't listen.

Shit like this is annoying, it doesn’t explain some aspect well.
For the final puzzle, I had the right idea, but they intentionally maybe the timing very specific to prevent someone accidentally solving it, except I had learnt (incorrectly) that you CAN’T fight the sand pull from the twin planet so either it would work or I was doing it wrong.
The DLC was so much better, nothing was unnecessarily convoluted because they didn’t need to β€œhide” the solution
Tunic had the same problem: it was never made clear TIMING was important, I was doing multiple β€œpuzzles” wrong and I could only assume I was miss inputting, until I read online that you should write it out and do it quickly. I had no indication time was a factor
All they had to do was add a chime if I took too long to indicate the β€œmagic” was fading or something

Well, it's layered differently. Part of the beauty of the base game is the freedom, and that when you know what you're doing, you can get around the system easily and quickly. Once you have gathered enough information, you can end the game right there. But the DLC needs you to find 3 pieces of information that all require you to delve through the entirety of The Stranger, so there's no gating necessary. I don't really know if I'd say better designed, both are good I think.

It's a crapshoot. This exact same sticking point got me too. The people arguing against you are too stupid to understand the midpoint would be inside the planet itself. Most charitable interpretation is that the interior of the mechanism is also spinning at some rate and the Nomai just timed the sync between that interior spinning teleporter and the teleporter on the planet surface to the planet to planet teleporter arbitrarily.
